ALL ARE WELCOME
JCC OF LBI COMMUNITY SEDER
Rabbi & Sheri Jay invite you to join them at their Zoom Seder table for the JCC of LBI Community Seder on Sunday evening at 6:00 PM. Rabbi will lead a fun and interactive Seder. If you are interested, create a breakout room for you to join others for dinner.
A MESSAGE FROM
THE RABBI
Not a long message for this Shabbat immediately preceding Passover. Today during our Thursday morning Torah study class, we talked about Dayeinu. You know the song. It comes shortly after we recite the Ten Plagues and pour out our wine. You may also know that the song is set up thusly: “If God had only done ‘X’, and not done ‘Y’, It would have been enough.” Indeed, it does this 15 times.

It is a fun song. The tune is very upbeat and the words show that God will do just about anything for the Children of Israel. But because of its jaunty melody, and the fact that it serves as a reminder that food will be served shortly, I think that an underlying message is mostly lost on us.

The song repeats and repeats and repeats the idea that what God has done “is enough”. But do we ever stop to consider what “enough” is? How many times have we said: “You’ve done enough for me (or us), go help someone else”? I would imagine that the honest answer to that question is, “rarely.”

As we sing the song this year, we should consider where (and when) we might be able to proclaim: “Please don’t do (or give) anymore, I have enough.”

AND AN EXERCISE FOR THE SEDER TABLE:

We have been impacted by the pandemic for over a year. Let’s pretend that the pandemic is our Egypt (not so farfetched), and that it has decided to set us free. As in the Exodus, we need to leave very quickly.  At your Seder tables I would love you to consider what you would bring with you from your pandemic experience, and what you would leave behind. Share, with me, the responses that you get!

 A Chag Sameach to all.

It is hard to believe that Passover begins at sundown Saturday night. It is also hard to believe that we have been unable to be together as parishioners, congregants, and friends for over a year. We have done amazing things as a congregation during our time apart. We have conducted daily Minyans both in the morning and in the evening for those that needed to say Kaddish. We have had meetings, events, programs, and dinners; all via zoom, we have been active. Now that we will be spending our second Passover apart, I feel we need to look forward to the time when we will be together again. I can tell you that your board of directors is working diligently to bring this new beginning to a reality. I can not give you details yet, but I can say that it will not be as long as our ancestors wandered in the desert. I think we all need to have a time of lightheartedness, even in this time of despair. As individuals we have been through a lot, as a member of the human race, we have been tested more than we would have ever dreamed of. But there is light at the end of the tunnel, we will be back together as a community.

When we do open, we will be taking small steps, so we do not have to be challenged by any setbacks. We will combine common sense measures with the latest information provided by the experts. Masks and social distancing will be part of our first steps, both for indoor and outdoor activities. Things may look different, but we will still be the same warm and friendly place that we all love. There are issues that your directors have to resolve in order for us to provide a safe, satisfying, and enjoyable experience once we can return to the JCC. For now, we all need to look forward to Passover before we begin the next journey.

In closing Irene and I wish your and your loved ones a Ziessen Peach and we look forward to being with you all soon. Stay safe, Stay healthy, Stay tuned

Mike

In this Zoom era, we have been able to have a daily minyan at 8:15 AM and at 7:30 PM and on Shabbat. We encourage you to join us on the day of your loved one’s yahrzeit. In the morning, the service is about ½ hour beginning at 8:15 and in the evening at 7:30 until about 7:45. Rabbi will be glad to say the traditional El Malei Rachamim prayer for you, which is recited during the funeral, going up to the grave of the departed, Yizkor remembrance day and other occasions on which the memory of the dead is recalled. You are also welcome to share with the minyan some special memories of your loved one.
