John Prenger (’72) came to Saint John’s School of Theology and Seminary as a transfer student. While initially believing that a seminary closer to his Missouri home was the best fit, his peers introduced him to the SOT/Sem, and he felt that there was something special for him there. A calling on his heart to transfer began, and in the summer of 1970, John made the faith-filled move into a new community rooted in deep fellowship and commitment to service. He soon realized Saint John’s has many best practices and an explicit knowledge of what it means to be a community, and he is now part of that forever.
The SOT/Sem provided John with a lifelong support system. Beginning in graduate school and continuing through the evolution of careers, life changes, and retirement, his graduating class has a tradition of sending a chain letter that is mailed throughout the group, which is made up of 13 members today. When he sees a manila envelope in the mail, he stops everything he is doing to see what has happened since the last letter. The importance of connection and community learned at Saint John’s has allowed him to grow in his faith, especially when making hard decisions and living through their circumstances. Having a community to rely upon to provide unwavering support to your relationship with Christ is crucial for every Christian.
