Annual City Council Reorganization
On Tuesday, December 7, the Beaumont City Council held its annual reorganization. Councilmember Mike Lara officially passed the gavel and the title of Mayor to Lloyd White.

Learn More About Your City Council:

The City Council selection of the Mayor and Mayor Pro-Tem occurs annually at the first Council meeting in December by a seniority rotation.
Fats, oil and grease (commonly referred to as F.O.G) can be found in the following:
  • Meats (chicken, beef, fish, pork, bacon, turkey)
  • Dairy products
  • Cooking agents (lard, shortening, butter, cooking oil)
  • Certain condiments (mayonnaise, gravy, salad dressing, sauces, icing)
  • Food scraps

F.O.G. Buildup is Dangerous to You and the Environment
F.O.G. is not broken down by garbage disposals. When you pour F.O.G. down your kitchen sink, it enters the sewer system where it cools and eventually congeals into a solid “ball” of grease.

These balls cause blockages in the sewer system, posing dangerous health and environmental risks and increasing costs for you, the customer. Blockages in the sewer system can cause raw sewage to back up into your home or your neighbors’ homes. Blockages can also spill into creeks, rivers, and streams, causing significant environmental damage.

Preventing Problems from Fats, Oils and Grease Buildup
Never pour fats, oils or grease in sink drains or toilets. You can prevent F.O.G by following these simple tips:
  • SCRAPE grease solids directly into a lined trash can.
  • POUR cooled liquid grease into a sealed container.
  • WIPE remaining grease and debris with a paper towel and throw in the trash.

Mid-Year Street Enhancement Update
Beaumont continues to enhance roadways with the Mid-Year Street Enhancement Project. The Road & Rehabilitation Program, which includes the Mid-Year Street Project, is an annual Capital Improvement Project (CIP) with the goal of enhancing Beaumont's 131.32 centerline miles (281.91 lane miles) of city-owned streets.

2021 Mid-Year Street Improvement Project - R-06
  • Who: All American Asphalt
  • What: Slurry seal, asphalt overlay, and asphalt rubber aggregate membrane (ARAM) treatment, grind and overlay and full-depth replacement treatments to 6,671,656 square feet of street surfaces.
  • When: Winter 2021/22
  • Where: Project Map

The combined project will spend the most restrictive funds first, SB-1, then Measure A, and, lastly, General Fund revenues. The combined funding sources as shown in the approved CIP budgets provide for a total of $5,577,934.

The identified streets will receive the most appropriate treatment method to maximize the budget and community impact.

CHIEF'S CORNER | SAFE DRIVING
In September of 2021, to deter dangerous and illegal driving behaviors, the Beaumont Police Department was awarded a $50,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Locally the Beaumont Police Department has seen an alarming trend of increased driving under the influence (DUI) arrests and traffic collisions. While we have seen a 3% decrease in traffic collisions, we have seen an increase in traffic collision related injuries. 26% of these collisions it was determined that unsafe speed was a primary factor. In the last quarter of 2021, the Beaumont Police Department issued over 1,000 traffic related citations for infractions related to speed, distracted driving, failure to stop at posted stop signs and traffic signals, etc.

In addition to holding quarterly DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoints, the Beaumont Police Department is implementing a police traffic services program to deter dangerous and illegal driving behaviors, to decrease the risk of collisions in the community. The grant funds will be used for additional enforcement measures, including:

  • DUI checkpoints and patrols specifically focused on suspected impaired drivers.
  • Enforcement operations focused on suspected distracted drivers in violation of California’s hands-free cell phone law.
  • Bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement operations focused on driver behaviors that put vulnerable road users at risk.
  • Enforcement operations focused on top violations that cause crashes: speeding, failure to yield, stop sign and/or red-light running, and improper turning or lane changes.
  • Community education presentations on traffic safety issues such as distracted driving, DUI, speeding, and bicycle and pedestrian safety.
  • Collaborative enforcement efforts with neighboring agencies.
  • Officer training and/or recertification: Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).
  • The grant program will run through September 2022.

Safe driving is the responsibility of all motorists out on the road. We are asking our citizens to do their part by slowing down, using hands-free devices, stopping at all stop signs/traffic signals and being a more courteous driver. Taking extra precautions while driving can save lives, do your part to improve safety out on the road.
