December 2020 / January 2021
I combined two months (December 2020 & January 2021) in this one Newsletter. I thought it was the best way to identify the big changes to the regulations for 2021. What's in store for 2021? New regulations from IATA, a relief from regulation from USDOT/PHMSA and a delay in the effective date of the dangerous goods code of the IMO.

Also, check out my Q&As and FAQs below for answers to questions you may wish to ask.

Significant Changes and Amendments to the 62nd Edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations

If you offer for transport a dangerous good by air, you must comply with the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations. As of January 1, 2021 you must comply with the 62nd Edition. If you remain in compliance with the 61st Edition during 2021 you may be in violation of new regulations! This short article summarizes the significant changes to the 62nd Edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.

Already in compliance with the 62nd Edition? Watch out! On January 1, 2021 IATA issued an addendum to its regulations for 2021. A link to that addendum is included in this article.
USDOT/PHMSA Makes Changes to Hazardous Materials Regulations to Reduce Regulatory Burden
USDOT/PHMSA doesn’t update its Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) annually as does IATA. It updates them semi-annually in March and October. A Final Rule published in the Federal Register in November of 2020 contained many changes to the HMR to reduce the burden of HazMat shippers and carriers. One of those reliefs was a significant addition to the HazMat eligible for the limited quantity exception.
Status of the IMDG Code for 2021
Container Ship
The big news here is the lack of a change on January 1, 2021. Due to COVID-19 the IMO did not publish the 2020 Edition of its IMDG Code for 2021, thus delaying its mandatory compliance date. If you ship dangerous goods by vessel you must mark these dates!
