Election for Pacific Masters Officers
At the Annual Celebration and Meeting, November 12

In odd numbered years, Pacific Masters is required to hold elections for our Pacific Masters officers at our annual meeting. This year, these elections will take place at our Annual Celebration and Meeting on November 12, 2023.

Per our bylaws, a nominating subcommittee is formed and presents a list of at least one nominee for each office to the Pacific Masters Committee meeting prior to the Annual Meeting. Our bylaws also allow for additional nominations. The 2023 Pacific Masters nominating subcommittee will present this year’s candidates at our September 20, 2023 monthly meeting. The candidates will also be posted on our website on September 18 and listed in the next UPDATE newsletter, to be published October 2.

If, after the publication of our 2023 candidates, a Pacific Masters member wishes to make an additional nomination for one of the elected positions, they may do so as a floor nomination at the Annual Meeting following the guidelines listed in the bylaws: (reproduced below) and present them to the chair onsite at the beginning of the Annual Meeting activities (8 am, November 12). While these floor nominations are allowed per our bylaws, we encourage interested candidates to contact the Chair ASAP so that we can prepare, and run a smooth election.

103.5.5.D. Additional nominees shall be accepted at the Annual Meeting upon nomination by two (2) individual members of Pacific Masters Swimming and written consent of the nominee(s).
Nominations Open for Pacific Masters Awards
Due October 2

Do you know a Pacific Masters member who has gone above and beyond this past year? Let's give them the recognition they deserve.

Nominations are now open for our 2023 Service awards. Pacific Masters Swimming is a vibrant community with many swimmers and non-swimmers who enjoy officiating, organizing or supporting the community in other ways. At our Annual Meeting, we recognize those who participate or contribute in an exceptional fashion. We award:

- Nancy Ridout Award for Distinguished Service
- Contributor of the Year Award
- Personal Achievement Awards
- Appreciation Awards
- Peggy Lucchesi Award

See Section 101.8 of our Administrative Handbook for details on each award. To help with recall, past award winners are here. Who do you know that is deserving? Please think about this and send nominations to our Chair by October 2nd.

New "Distance Fly Virtual Challenge"
Seeks to Recognize Past and Present 1650 Fly Swimmers

In the early 1980s, Rinconada Masters member Aldo da Rosa, during a 1650 Freestyle event, famously switched from freestyle to butterfly at the 150-yard mark, swimming a remarkable 1500 yards of butterfly in a competition.

Inspired by this event, Rinconada Masters included a special 1650 Barboleta Event from 1983 to 2019, adding the option to compete in the 1650 butterfly, at the end of their annual SCY meet.

Sadly, Rinconada Masters disbanded shortly before the pandemic. However, the tradition has just been resurrected by Albany Armada Masters as a Virtual competition for distances of 500, 1000, or 1650. ALL finishers of the 1650 fly, past and present, are invited to contact meet director Leah Carroll to receive a special Distance Fly patch. Current and historical records are posted on the Albany Armada website as well as an image of the well-deserved patch.

Next year, the competition, tentatively scheduled to be held between May 1 and June 30, 2024, will become the "Distance Non-Free Virtual Challenge" offering 500, 1000, or 1650-yard Butterfly, Backstroke, or Breaststroke. You may swim it in meters and convert your time. We look forward to your participation.

NBC Broadcaster Michael Phelps
In the Right Booth at the Right Time

The NBC broadcasting partnership between Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gaines has been highly successful for many years. Together, they have called seven Olympic Games, and have also teamed up for other major competitions. At the World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, Hicks and Gaines were joined by Michael Phelps, 28-time Olympic medalist whose career has been documented by Hicks and Gaines, from Phelps’ 2000 Olympic debut in Sydney to his farewell in Rio de Janeiro, in 2016.

Phelps has called occasional races with the entrenched NBC tandem since his retirement, but his presence in Fukuoka was particularly notable. Hear Michael's commentary as he watches France's Leon Marchand break his world record in the 400 IM, that Phelps had set in 2008.
