ALL SAINTS DAY
NOVEMBER 6

For a number of years now, we have been celebrating All Saints Day on November 1 when it falls on a Sunday, and the first Sunday after November 1 when it does not. Though still relatively new to many Baptists, it is an ancient Christian tradition that dates back at least to the fifth century. In the Eastern Church, it began in the season of Easter and eventually moved to the season after Pentecost. In the Western Church, it moved to November 1 in 835 C.E.

The celebration began as a way of recognizing certain people, but today it points to the saintly status of all Christians – not to our perfection but to our experience of being shaped by God’s grace as revealed in Christ. All Saints Day also provides space to celebrate our great hope for eternal life. Thus, we include a prayerful remembrance of the church members we have lost over the past year and locate our very real grief in the context of eternal hope.

This year we will also include a special recognition for our beloved custodian Jimmy Thompson who died suddenly on July 11. A funeral service celebrating his life was held in Goldsboro this summer, but many church members were not able to attend. So, we felt a need to create space not only to remember Jimmy but to extend love and support to his family. We will accomplish both purposes in the service and at a light reception immediately following it.

CROP WALK HAPPENING THIS SUNDAY!

The Greater Triangle Area CROP Hunger Walk starts and ends at Pullen Park, this Sunday, October 30. Registration/sign in is at 2pm with the Walk beginning at 3pm. To see the 3-mile and 1.4-mile routes, click here.

You may join/donate to the FBC church-wide team here. Join/donate to the FBC youth team here. You may also donate through the FBC electronic option. If you prefer to write a check you may make it out to FBC and write CROP Walk in the memo and place it in the offering plate or mail it to the church: FBC, 99 N. Salisbury, Raleigh. 27603. Donations for this year's Walk are accepted through November 30.

Funds raised support these local agencies: Catholic Parish Outreach Dorcas Ministries, Food Bank of Central and Eastern NC, North Raleigh Ministries, and Urban Ministries of Wake County. In addition, global efforts are supported through the work of the Church World Service, which has a huge refugee ministry and works locally with the Welcome House. To find out more about each of these agencies, click here.

There has never been a greater need than now, as each of these agencies is stretched beyond belief addressing hunger insecurity as our nation is coming out of the pandemic and facing rising food costs. So please support our October mission project the CROP Walk by either donating or walking . . . or BOTH!

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to help set-up and take-down the event site at Pullen Park, please go here or contact Wayne Hager, who is serves as the co-coordinator of the whole Walk.

`COATS NEEDED

As the fall brings colder temperatures, the clothing ministry has an urgent need for all sizes of men's and women's coats. You may bring your donations to the bin located at the back parking lot door, any time the church office is open. We appreciate your continued support through donations that allow us to provide warmth for our neighbors in need!
CHURCH CONFERENCE TOMORROW NIGHT

Our regularly scheduled Church Conference will be held this Wednesday, October 26, at 6:15pm. The Zoom link is below, as well as a call-in number for those who would rather join via phone. Our by-laws require 50 members in attendance (in-person and Zoom) in order to transact business. Please make plans to attend so we can vote on important matters for our church.

The Financial Year 2023 (FY23) budget narrative was created to give church members a high level view of the financial forecast for next year. The narrative points out the contributing factors driving the increase in the budget FY23 from FY22. The narrative also shows some comparisons to previous budgets to help build context. The Finance Committee thanks you for utilizing this tool as you prepare for the budget presentation at the October Church Conference.

THIS IS THE LAST WEEK FOR
DEACON ELECTIONS!

Per the bylaws, the election of deacons will take place during the month of October. Each member may vote for up to eight men and eight women. Ballots are in the library, the Gathering Room, the narthex, and at the Throne; you may also obtain an electronic version below. The box for ballots will be on the long counter in the library. This Sunday, October 30, the tellers appointed by the chair will gather to count the ballots, and the chair and vice-chair will then notify those selected.

Please see the attached deacon election ballot for a current list of deacons
and their spouses who are not eligible based on the bylaws,
as well as others who have asked not to be considered for election.

Please give thoughtful and prayerful consideration as you participate in the deacon election process.

TOY JOY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Though we were still able to serve our guests the last two years by having their gifts pre-packaged and delivered in our parking lot, we're excited to invite the parents into the building to shop for their children's gifts again! The event will be held on Saturday, November 12. We plan to have a morning session and an afternoon session so you may choose to work one or both times. All volunteers as well as guests must wear masks while in the building. For safety's sake, we will also limit the number of people in the Fellowship Hall at one time. We ask that all volunteers inside the building be no younger than middle school-age students. Parents of three-year-olds through fifth graders can work with their children in a hospitality area outside the building serving drinks and cookies to our guests as they finish shopping.

This Sign-up Genius link gives you the option of signing up for the morning session and/or the afternoon session. If you speak Spanish and can serve as a translator, or need to have a job that doesn't require you to be on your feet most of the time, please indicate that in the comments. We'll assign you to a specific job and let you know what you'll be doing a few days before the event. There is also a need for volunteers on November 11 to help set up and that information will be on the Sign-up Genius as well.

The Toy Joy team is looking forward to your help this year as we work together to serve the children who will receive the Christmas presents that have been donated for them. If you have any questions, please email or call Anne Cooke (mobile: 919-986-9465 or home: 919-782-7491)

NORTH CAROLINA STATE MISSIONS OFFERING

Our NC Mission Offering helps fund non-profit organizations doing work and providing services primarily in North Carolina. Through the generosity of FBC members, we have already received $1,862 toward our goal of $10,000. The following organizations will receive our offering:

Baptists on Mission Disaster Relief is currently serving Hurricane Ian survivors in some of the worst hit parts of Florida. Manna One feeding unit (30,000 meals per day capacity) is set up and providing meals in Cape Coral, Florida. Feeding, recovery, shower/laundry, logistics, safety, Medical Reserve Corp, communications, admin and chaplaincy are all currently working.

Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina (BCH) was born in 1885 with the Thomasville Orphanage and later the Kennedy Home in Kinston in 1914. Today, BCH as a nonprofit in 21 statewide locations has added a variety of services to offer help and hope to children, families, single mothers, college students, intellectually/developmentally disabled adults, and aging adults.

Baptist Retirement Homes is a faith-based, not-for-profit organization with a 70-year legacy of excellence to provide older adults with a second-to-none senior living experience rooted in our core values — honesty, fairness, compassion, cooperation, dependability, humor, kindness, loyalty, patience, and conscientiousness.

Baptist Hospital (Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist) touches the lives of so many from the smallest child to aging adults. As a nonprofit healthcare organization, it provides the highest quality compassionate care, conducts lifesaving research, and offers leading-edge medical education as well as patient assistance with medical bills.

Thank you for your gifts and prayers for this offering.
Nancy Moore Phillips, WMU Director
