Community Newsletter August 21, 2023 Volume 9 Issue 4

Greetings, Community Members and Partners –

I hope all is well with each of you.

We are grateful for Dr. Steve Head’s 40 years of service at Lone Star College. As of July 31, 2023 he has officially retired as the 4th Chancellor to our institution. He has had a remarkable career that led to LSC being one of the largest institutions in the country. We wish him the best as he enjoys a well-deserved retirement.

I am very excited to announce that Mario Castillo, previously our Chief Operating Officer, has officially begun his tenure as the new Chancellor of Lone Star College. Chancellor Castillo has worked at LSC for eight years but has been associated with the institution for eleven. There are very few system-wide initiatives in which he has not been involved, whether through his work as COO or Vice Chancellor of General Counsel.

He is a student advocate that will continue Lone Star College's legacy of excellence. His intelligence, attention to detail, and overall vision will significantly benefit our Lone Star College communities. See the press release below regarding the official announcement of this appointment.

Register Now for Fall Classes

We are in the midst of registration efforts for this fall. All sixteen-week and first term 8-week classes begin August 28th. Second term 8-week classes begin October 25th.

There are several new initiatives starting at LSC-Houston North this fall.

Our Electrical Technology courses will begin on October 25th. This program will lead into the Electrical Vehicle Charging Station Maintenance Installation plan beginning in January.

In addition, we are piloting hy-flex courses. These are classes offered simultaneously in person and online through our virtual technology. This method of instruction has proven to work for students who choose online learning but want to interact with their instructors and classmates in real time.

We are also starting a free textbook initiative with a few of our core courses. If this pilot works well, we will continue to expand each semester. The costs of textbooks have continued to be an ongoing challenge for many of our students.

If you or someone you know is interested in enrolling in classes, please visit LoneStar.edu/HNApply to see the admissions steps, a complete list of college programs, and information relating to financial aid.

Feel free to contact us at 281.260.3500 or by emailing HN-Info@LoneStar.edu@LoneStar.edu, and we will answer your questions and help you through the processes.

Thank You For Helping Our Students

We are very appreciative of each of you that have helped us help our students. At Lone Star College-Houston North, we focus heavily on removing barriers that keep our students from succeeding, and through your support, we have been able to help many students complete their degrees.

A recent report found that our four CARE Centers (food pantries), funded and supplied through donations, had over 4,700 visits during the fall and spring semesters. Over 26% of our graduates from this past year utilized our pantries.

Our fiscal year budget review, including all wraparound service supports (technology, clothing, emergency funding, etc.), found that the student assistance provided increased 300% over the previous year. This increase in aid would not have been possible without community support.

I want to thank each of you for being great partners. As always, don't hesitate to contact me directly if you want a college presence at your events or have questions about Lone Star College.

I wish you the best.

Sincerely,

Quentin Wright, Ed.D.

President, Lone Star College-Houston North

Our Panther Pact Emergency Fund is a safety net for our students, with 100% of the proceeds helping them directly.

We are the most diverse Lone Star College institution and our locations exist in the lowest-income sections of our system’s service area. However, for the past three years, our students have continually had some of the highest completion rates within the system.

We invested a lot of time into developing partnerships so we can help students in a cost-efficient manner. We've helped students remove barriers such as food insecurity, clothing and toiletry needs, textbook costs, as well as a technology divide.

Your contribution will directly support a student in continuing their legacy.
