Staying Strong in Medical School
Welcome all new and returning students! Now that you’re here, it’s more important than ever to stay strong and healthy. One of the ways to do that is to make sure you find time to exercise. According to a Harvard Medical School study, 120 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per week can improve memory. Physical activity also has been shown to improve sleep as well as reduce stress and anxiety. If you already have a regular exercise schedule, you’re on the right track but it’s important to balance that routine with flexibility. There will be times when you have to study late or arrive early and your exercise schedule will be disrupted. Be sure to always “seize the moment” and get physical activity whenever and wherever you can. A great resource is YouTube where you can do a quick search for “instant recess,” which will give you activity breaks that can be completed in five or 10 minutes. Another option is to lift some weights or grab a mat for stretching, yoga, or planks. These activities can even be done while watching your favorite Netflix show. It’s important to be flexible with your limited time and remember that small doses of exercise can add up to great health benefits!
