Welcome

Dear ,

Happy Spring to one and all! It was a loooooong winter, but spring arrived early this year and despite the 6-8 inches of wet heavy snow we received on April 16 (which melted quickly!), I think it's here to stay.

April 2021 Snow in Landgrove Vermont
April in Vermont - April 15, 2021
Follow Us on Facebook
April and May are typically quiet months in our mountain communities. We say goodbye to the snow and hello to spring: first to the mud, then to tree buds and green grass and finally to spring and early summer blooms. It's a transformative period when Vermont "greens up" . . .  literally and figuratively, and one of my favorite seasons.

This edition of the newsletter includes information on Vermont's updated travel and quarantine guidelines and the Weston Playhouse's 85th Summer Season, but our focus this month is keeping Vermont looking clean and "green" and includes tons of information on Vermont's recycling opportunities and rules. I hope the information is helpful, and have provided lots of links for more information. Please do your part to keep the Green Mountain State looking its bestl!

Best wishes to you all!

Vermont Forward
In early April, Vermont Governor Phil Scott released the Vermont Forward Plan, a three-step plan to ensure a safe easing of personal restrictions and the continued reopening of the state's economy.

Vermont real estate is considered a low-contact sector and is included in STEP 1 of the Vermont Forward Plan outlined below. Step 1 took effect on April 9 with steps 2 and 3 to follow between now and July 4.

Under the Step 1 plan, real estate professionals and our clients must:
Continue to wear masks and physical distance except when in the presence of household members.
Comply with the state's Universal Guidance, which includes five basic principles:
  1. Stay home if sick.
  2. Wear a mask.
  3. Ensure six-foot spaces and uncrowded places.
  4. Practice good hygiene.
  5. Think before you travel.
Travelers to and from Vermont will no longer be required to quarantine before or after arriving in Vermont, provided they meet one of the following:
Must have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
If not fully vaccinated, must receive a negative COVID-19 test no more than 3 days prior to arrival in Vermont.
(Note: Although not required, some businesses may ask to see your vaccination card or proof of a negative test.)

Vermont's Recycling Guidelines

Vermont's recycling rules aren't new but they can be confusing and newcomers will need to bring themselves up-to-speed.

Vermont law prohibits the following from the state's landfills and these items must be recycled.

Banned as of July 1, 2015
* Aluminum and steel cans
* Aluminum foil and aluminum pie pans - clean please

* Glass bottles and jars from foods and beverages

* Plastics #1 and #2 (PET and HDPE resin types)

* Corrugated cardboard

* White and mixed paper

* Newspaper, magazines, catalogues, paper mail, and envelopes
* Box board - Cereal boxes and such but not the inserts

Banned as of July 1, 2016
* Leaf and yard debris and clean wood.

Banned as of July 1, 2020
* Food Scraps, coffee grounds, egg shells, etc.

For information on what can and can't be recycled, see the following:

Electronics and Hazardous Materials Recycling

The disposal of electronics and hazardous materials is not permitted in Vermont landfills, including the Londonderry and Winhall Transfer Stations. Special collections days are scheduled semi-annually.

Get rid of it now! It's important to think ahead and take advantage of these disposal days . . . especially if there is any chance you might want to list your home for sale. Old electronics and hazardous materials are hard to dispose of at the last minute and you won't be able to leave anything behind for the new owners.

Mark your calendars! Upcoming events are:
  • Electronics Recycling will be Saturday, May 22, 2021, between 9 AM - 1 PM at the Flood Brook School in Londonderry.  Click here for information.
  • Hazardous Waste Recycling will be Saturday June 5, 2021, between 9 AM - 1 PM at the Flood Brook School.Click here for information.
  • These events are available for residents of Landgrove, Londonderry, Peru, Weston, and Windham.
If you are a resident or homeowner in Winhall, see their Transfer Station website for information. Click here for more information.

If you live in a different Vermont town, contact your town clerk, town administrator or solid waste coordinator for more information.

Note: the Winhall Transfer Station will accept small electronics from residents of nearby towns with no fee for most items, or a modest fee for some. Contact the Winhall Transfer Station for more information.

Green Up Day 2021
Vermont's most unique "holiday" is coming up on Saturday, May 1 - Green Up Day! Vermont is known as the Green Mountain State and Green Up Day is one of the most important ways that Vermont can stay GREEN!

Now, don't get me wrong, it would be great if we didn't need a Green Up Day, but we do . . . so I urge everyone to participate. And, if you're a non-resident or vacation-home owner, maybe you could plan to visit that weekend and volunteer to help in your adopted neighborhood!

Drug Take-Back Day
pills3.jpg
National Drug Take-Back Day is April 24, 2021 and several local police departments - including Winhall and Manchester PDs - have partnered with The Collaborative to collect prescription drugs.

When dropping off medications, community members are asked to place their expired or unused RX pills or patches in their original bottle or in a disposable bag. Personal information should be removed so that the drugs can be anonymously dropped in the RX drop box.
  • The Manchester Police Department is located at 6039 Main Street/Rt.7A, Manchester, VT.
  • The Winhall Police Department is located at 107 Route 30, Bondville, VT.
  • For other drop off locations please click here.
