Staying in Touch
Hello, JCA Interages Volunteers,
The Interages staff is making arrangements with MCPS to renew and mail your MCPS Badge, needed for volunteering virtually and in-person. For badges expiring in October, Interages staff will submit a request to MCPS in the first week of October. If all of your requirements are met, MCPS will mail the MCPS badge to JCA Interages, we will then mail the MCPS badge to you. A badge with a 10/22 expiration date means it will expire on 10/31/2022.
Please note that a valid Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse Webinar viewing is required for MCPS to release a renewed badge. Your webinar viewing is valid for three academic (not calendar) years from the time you last watched the webinar. If you need to watch the webinar again, CLICK HERE.
You can see when you last took the webinar by logging in as a GUEST to the website: https://classroom.mcpsmd.org/ - clicking on volunteers/contractors - on the left of the screen click on grades. If you cannot remember your password, you can click on forget password and create a new password.

SEEKING A VOLUNTEER TO AID IN LETTER WRITING: KC SHARE FROM A DISTANCE
The Jewish Council for the Aging (JCA) is seeking a scribe (who is at least 18 years old) to help facilitate a pen pal program between students and Kensington Club (KC) members, who are adults with early-stage memory loss. This would be an in-person role starting the month of November, once a week either Tuesdays or Thursdays, for an hour between the hours of 9am and 1pm - the time is somewhat flexible. The end goal is to find someone to volunteer for the long term, but we are seeking someone immediately for the month of November.
Responsibilities include meeting with two of our KC members weekly and helping them complete correspondence with their youth counterparts.
JCA helps older adults in the Greater Washington, D.C. region maintain independence, dignity, vitality and self-respect. It also helps people of different generations understand, learn from and care for one another. If you're interested, please contact Grace Kim at gkim@accessjca.org for more details.

Excerpt from resources
“All teachers want their students to master the skills that will allow them to enjoy reading books and writing their own texts. There is little disagreement on the goal, but teachers can have very different beliefs about the best ways to help their students accomplish that goal. This post explains the two most common approaches to literacy instruction, how they differ, and why one approach currently is the more promising means of preventing reading difficulties.”

Volunteer Highlight
JCA Heyman Interages is pleased to introduce Brian Berke, an Interages Volunteer to you. Currently, Brian is volunteering in the Interages Maryvale Elementary School Pre-K program. He loves being a surrogate grandparent to the kids. He says "nothing beats it! I love to get to know the 4-5-year-old persons' mindset." He adores his own two grandchildren aged 6 and 2 and two grown sons.
Brian is from Brooklyn NY originally. Before retiring, he worked for 50 years in the mortgage and commercial real estate world. He has volunteered in the past with Higher Achievement tutoring 3rd graders in math and coaching his children. There was the challenge of the children having finished the long school day and needing to do homework after school.
Brian was also a Teaching Assistant with Montgomery County Public Schools and tutored high school students in Algebra. From 2017-2019 he worked part-time as a senior helper, serving as a companion for elderly folk who couldn't get around. He said, "I took them for errands or outings or just sat around with them chatting or playing games." In addition, Brian loves reading mystery/suspense novels.
Thank you Brian for volunteering!

JOIN SHARE FROM A DISTANCE AND BECOME A PEN PAL
Are you or someone you know interested in being matched with a young person to exchange letters back and forth? Build a relationship with a young person during this difficult time when people of ALL ages are feeling isolated and eager to make connections. Only first names are given and all correspondence is filtered through JCA staff. Even though students have returned to the classroom and activities, it is rewarding to make these "old-fashioned" connections with a young person and share perspectives as we move into post-pandemic life.
You can choose to write to a student via email or postal mail. We need more older adults to match with the many interested students. For more info or to sign up, please email sharefromadistance@accessjca.org. Thanks for your help and support!
