Our mission is intersecting faith and community to empower

Grayson County families to end child homelessness.

MESSAGE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear friends,

Although it is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is right around the corner, it must be true, because my heart is FULL of gratitude for all the wonderful ways you are helping families in our community!

I am thankful for your many acts of kindness! You have loved our guests, donated gift cards and cleaning supplies, dropped off food and clothing, called with thoughtful, uplifting words, organized our closets, sorted canned goods, filed papers, mailed in checks, taught classes, provided meals, served on our Board, made donations, and listened to those who needed to talk. There are not enough words to express how grateful I feel to be part of such an excellent organization!

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. If that's the case, then this newsletter may qualify as a dissertation length essay! Keep reading to find out what is going on in this picture.

Thank you for all the ways you care! May your blessings be abundant and may you know that they are.

With great thankfulness,

Leigh

TOOL TALK

Each Thursday, from 6-7:30 PM, a fun group gathers at the Day Center to learn household repair and maintenance tips from handyman Jason Barrett! He has blessed us with a cornucopia of information!

The first week included an introduction to basic tools, gear, PPE, and safety. Participants received their own work gloves and goggles. The second session covered electrical tools and devices, wiring, circuit breakers, and more. Upcoming topics are basic plumbing, P-traps, faucets, and fill valves, drywall repair, and preventative maintenance. Thank you, Jason!

For information about joining the class, please call 903-771-0322. For Barrett's Handyman & Window Cleaning Service, call 903-771-2530.

TCS CARE-A-THON 2023

Last Friday, seven sixth graders from Texoma Christian School served Family Promise by giving the Day Center a make-over. As part of their 2023 Care-A-Thon, these students cleaned and organized the playroom, sorted puzzles and game pieces, and even color coordinated the bookshelves! We are so grateful for all their hard work and service on our behalf. Special thanks to computer technology teacher Ila Rigdon and Spanish teacher Matsuko Lee for accompanying these caring students.

WANTS VERSUS NEEDS

We are so grateful for Joshua Whitworth and Kay Cato of Independent Financial! They recently taught a children's class on identifying wants versus needs. While everyone agreed that food is a need, there was some lively discussion about pets! In which category do you think they belong?! Classes are free and open to the public. Snacks and childcare are provided. Come join us! We meet at the Day Center, at 901 E. Houston Street in Sherman.

The next class hosted by Independent Financial will be held at the Day Center on Tuesday, November 28, from 6-7 PM. The topic, "Your Financial Future", is geared for adults. If you can't wait until then, Cadence Bank will host a class on Fraud Prevention on Monday, November 6th, at 6:30 PM. This class also is for adults and will be held at Habitat for Humanity, 901 N. Grand Avenue in Sherman. As usual, snacks and childcare are provided. A BIG thanks to both of these banks for being our financial literacy partners!

THANK YOU FOR LOVING OUR FAMILIES!

Have you met the 10-month-old twins and their big brother? Aren't they all precious? They (and their mom) are the newest family in our Rotation program, along with another mom and her two teenage sons. They all are delightful folks and your kindness towards them is making a difference in their lives--and possibly in yours! Thank you!

Congregations hosting our guest families in November include: Georgetown Baptist in Pottsboro, Trinity Baptist in Sherman, Lakeway United Methodist of Pottsboro at Hagerman Baptist in Sherman, First United Methodist in Sherman, and Grace Lutheran in Denison. We are so thankful to our congregations for welcoming, feeding, and loving our guests so graciously!

IT HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL YEAR!

Tara Hickerson and Kristi Shilling each have been with Family Promise of Grayson County for a full year! Kristi serves the guests in our Rotation program, while Tara assists families in our HOPE (Housing Opportunities to Prevent Evictions) homelessness prevention and diversion program. If you have not met these talented Resource Advocates, you are missing out! They do a great job, are lots of fun, and occasionally dress independently!

GRACEFUL GIVERS

The generous youth group at Grace United Methodist church in Sherman recently collected canned food, snacks, juice, baby diapers, paper towels, and toilet paper to benefit those served by Family Promise of Grayson County. Grace's pastor, Reverend Jessica Wright, presented the bountiful donation to Executive Director Leigh Walker. Heartfelt thanks to those who gave and to the Grace youth for blessing the many families that will receive this thoughtful gift!

A final thought...

"And let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9 NIV
