President's Message
MAY!..can you believe its May already?! Wow, this year seems to be flying by! I can hardly believe in a little under 6 weeks we will be hosting our signature event, the Oregon Morgan Classic. The show is June 15th to 18th held at the Oregon Horse Center in Eugene. We are looking forward to extending our hospitality to all our exhibitors with their beautiful horses and to spectators at the show. Our show Chair, Karen Breckenridge, and her co-chair husband
Jim have been working nonstop to ensure that MHAO puts on a first class show.
There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes and much of the Breckenridges' personal time is dedicated and sacrificed to ensure that MHAO puts forth a top notch event. Their job includes everything from setting up special rates for hotels for our exhibitors, to the selection of the officials, to making sure all the I's are dotted and T's are crossed with our host venue. AND trying to make sure our costs are kept affordable and reasonable for all exhibitors.  Not an easy job to do! As we all know, prices are increasing in almost every aspect of everyday living, but Karen has managed to keep the rates for the horse show near what they were last year.

No matter how hard we work at keeping exhibitor costs down, we need your help. We offer sponsorships opportunities from as low as $50 for a class all the way up to Patron/Corporate levels of $1,000 with different levels in between. We even offer an advertising package for $25 some businesses may prefer. In addition, there are custom packages that are available that can be tailored to meet the request of the sponsor.

If you are interested in being a sponsor, no matter the level or amount, please contact :
Gay Adams for commercial sponsors at sunstonemorgans@comcast.net or
Karen Breckenridge at wylieriley@aol.com for patron sponsorships

The Oregon Morgan Classic is the ONLY Morgan horse show in Oregon.
Please help support the show in whatever way you are able.

This year we will return to our normal class schedule for the Futurity. However, there will be continued discussions about our program over this coming year. If you have any input for us to consider, please email it to Gay Adams. The only change we have made is to remove any reference to color. Color does not affect conformation and is not included as the conformation standard of the Morgan horse. We welcome Morgan horses of color to be entered in any of our Futurity classes.

Our thanks to all our wonderful donors and bidders!
What would we do without you?!?

Your support and participation means everything to us, and is responsible for our success in bringing in $14,465 this year. Proceeds from our auction are used to support the MHAO Breeders' Cup Futurity.

Open horses are still available for their minimum bid amount on a first come, first served basis until May 15th. Call Gay if interested.

We were light on "Other Items" this year. My apology. Family challenges limited my time this year. Watch for a Silent Auction section at the Oregon Morgan Classic specifically to be used to support the MHAO Futurity. That area &/or the items dedicated to the Futurity will be clearly labeled. Other items there will be in support of OMC & our Scholarship Program.

The winner of the drawing for a 2-page centerfold spread in this year's Futurity Booklet was Tony Lee for Astronomicallee! Congratulations Tony!

MHAO offers the only Stallion Service Auction & Futurity in the Western Region. We are here to support our breeders and stallion owners. Our futurity program is designed to support the training of young horses.

The AMHA Response To This Article
A Word from the American Morgan Horse Association President

We want your readers to know America’s oldest breed, which began with the birth of the colt known as Figure in 1789, is thriving today.

Your article references the inventory kept by The Livestock Conversancy when it states, “…fewer than 100 traditional Morgans—horses whose pedigrees are absent of outcrosses after 1930—were registered in 2016.” The accompanying table also listed “Morgan (traditional)” among “Breeds Needing Conservation.” The term “traditional” is a designation of the Livestock Conversancy, not of the Morgan Horse Registry. The term “traditional” does not describe an entire breed, it refers to specific bloodlines within the larger breed. It is our experience this statistic is often misconstrued by the general public.
Last year saw 2,011 new registrations of purebred Morgans, up more than 13 percent from 2020. For comparison, this figure is very close to the number of newly registered Arabians in the United States and significantly higher than new registrations of American Saddlebreds. More than 2,600 mares were bred in 2021, a 9.4 percent increase from the previous year. There are as many as 70,000 living Morgans. Breeding activity is fueled by a healthy demand for this versatile breed.

As the longtime recorder of purebred registrations, AMHA celebrates our unique breed, its bloodlines, colors, and the diverse disciplines in which it performs. The Morgan horse is not endangered.

Sincerely,

C. A. “Tony” Lee III, President,
American Morgan Horse Association
A Bit Of History
From Christian Heidorf:
Morgan Tiger, son of Gifford Morgan and Morgan Star, son of Black Hawk, both stallions, owned, trained and driven by Amos H. Rockwell. This team were driven bridle-less with a 10 foot whip. He exhibited this very special team of Morgans in every state in the Union -- except during the Civil War when most states were focused on some other issues. In 1865, he exhibited this team in New York City to the acclaim and wonderment of many onlookers. "...demonstrated to all beholders the Morgan's strongest attributes, which are great intelligence coupled with docility and fearless courage." Country Life, vol 17, 1910.
April Driving Clinic With Lisa Singer
In April, northwest folks enjoyed a clinic with international competitor and clinician, Lisa Singer.

Liz Goldman, Dallas Bolen, and Lana & Bruce Jackson had a full three day weekend in Granger at Will & Teresa Bron's lovely farm. They have a big dairy on one side of the road and raise Freisians on the other side. Nothing like having a dozen big black upheaded hairy thundering young Freisians come galloping up to the fence line every time you take a driving horse down the alley towards the arena!

The clinician was Lisa Singer from PA & SC, a multi titled international competitor and she was gracious, informative, and funny. Each of us had three lessons in dressage, cones, and hazards which was the most fun as we were a group of us three along with all the auditors crowded around as we'd walk, trot and canter through the Bron's professional obstacles under the watchful eye of Lisa who helped us with lots of technical input.

For a treat she picked Chip (Sutton Remembrance) to drive through herself and with a modest "I've never driven this horse before" she took off around the back of the place at a high trot and came into the hazard with all cylinders firing. Happily, Chip was effortless, smooth, and speedy! Earlier in the weekend I'd bashfully suggested I wanted to try Intermediate level and not knowing my driving skills she remained noncommittal. After her lightning turn with Chip she leaned down, grinned at me, and whispered, "Yes! Your horse can do it! You go along for the ride!" Heady stuff.

Philbe has been found!!!
UMPQUA FIRE KING AKA PHILBE. | NETPOSSE ID #4815 HAS BEEN FOUND!!! - Philbe has been missing since 11/20/21. We received a message from his owner that said, Philbe has been found!!!

"Long story short.....someone had seen the flyer and recognized the horse", says Erin Silver. "Just wanted to let you know Philbe, black Morgan stallion, that was stolen from Salem Oregon back in November has been found! Working with authorities at this point."
We want to thank everyone for sharing and caring, and for posting flyers. We keep saying that flyers work. Here is another example.

Rocket - The Miniature Morgan Horse
From Ellen Feld
I'd like to share the cover for my forthcoming book, Rocket: The Miniature Morgan Horse. What makes this cover extra special is that the artist, Heidi Osgood-Metcalf, is the niece of my original artist, Jeanne Mellin.

This is the first book in a new series, for readers ages 7-8. And like my other books, this one is based on a real horse, er, pony, named Rocket. He's my heart pony, frequently very naughty and very opinionated, but he always makes me laugh. And he's half Morgan. His daddy is a Morgan and his mom, a short, pudgy, Shetland pony. The book is at the printer now, and will be out in July.

Ways To Help Ukraine
Horses in Ukraine: How To Help
As conflict continues to rage in Ukraine, the situation grows more dire for equestrians evacuating the war zone with their horses.

The Ukrainian Equestrian Federation Charity Foundation (UEFCF) estimates upwards of 100,000 horses are in the country and in need of resources.
“…many of the horses are caught up in the war, with no possibility to flee and seek safety, with no shelter and care,” the UEFCF writes.
The Horse Network has compiled a list of resources currently accepting donations.

The Foundation for the Horse Accepting Gifts for Ukrainian Equine and Veterinary Medical Relief

As the devastation unfolds from the war in Ukraine, many in the equine and veterinary communities have asked how they can help. Through The Foundation for the Horse, the charitable arm of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), you can make a financial gift to those providing emergency relief and support, including veterinary organizations and the horses and animals they care for.

Young Adult Alliance Donates to Harry Sebring Memorial Scholarship
The AMHECT Young Adult Alliance is excited to share that they have generously decided to award a $3,000.00 donation to the Harry Sebring Memorial Grant. This grant gives AMHA members, under the age of 40, funds to further their equine education, skills, or proficiency and/or provide equine-related experiences and education to promote the grant recipient's business endeavors. It was created in memory of the incredible Harry Sebring, a renowned Morgan Horse trainer, by his family. He always wanted to see young adults excel personally and professionally in the industry. This donation will ensure the
grant continues to provide resources for those eligible AMHA members who would like to further their equine education. Proceeds from the hugely successful Pie-A-Trainer fundraiser at the 2021 Morgan Grand National, along with existing funds, helped make this contribution financially possible.

Stacey Myers, YAA Co-chair, had this to say about their donation, "Harry Sebring was instrumental to the ideas that helped form the Young Adult Alliance. Continuing education within the breed is part of the YAA's mission. We feel it is essential to ensure the sustainability of the Harry Sebring Memorial Grant and honor Harry. YAA's donation will continue education for the future of the Morgan Breed."

Today, we said goodbye to our old man, ATMF Sondancer. He has been a part of our family for over 26 of his 36 years, first as a dressage/hunt mount for me. He took me through many of my first horse related experiences…many shows, trail rides, OHSET events and even one very balanced pretty and SLOW barrels run! He then went on to tackle the western arena with my sister Katie Hardy, and they were quite a pair. They showed western pleasure and even tried drill team and team penning!

He was the sweetest most honest and reliable boy. He was a little on the lazy side but could be counted on to take even the youngest of riders safely around the ring. He taught many to ride and love horses and has touched so many hearts in his many years. He will be so Incredibly missed.

Sondancer truly was our “Million Dollar Horse” and for us, there will never be another like him.

A farewell to a long time family member is never an easy thing.
Our hearts go out to the Hardy family.
SBS In The Mood
(Troutbrook Alexander x SBS Putting On The Ritz)
1999 - 2022
“A horse gallops with her wings, Perseveres with her heart, And wins with her character “. Tesio

SBS In The Mood, aka Reba, was a very unique character, and her little whinny every morning for her breakfast will be missed. She ne - ver had a foal, we were afraid she’d lick it to death! She was a National Champion, a Regional Champion and pulled a sleigh through the snow with ease.

Brenda Hansen-Coats

Doug & Brenda, we are so sorry for your loss.
Eine Kline Dee
1986 - 2022
Another wonderful horse has left us. Eine Kline Dee, a dear sweet Morgan mare who taught hundreds and hundreds of people to ride. Eine retired to my home farm in 2020 and spent her last years in happy contentment. She was 36 and had a peaceful end, no colic or trauma, she'd just run her course. Eine had special friends, Karen Miller, Erin Diffley, Wanda Kupersmith and Mary Jo Sarver who doted on her in her later years, Diane Ford and Patty Lebon from earlier in life. Eine will be fondly remembered and missed by many. She served cheerfully as a school horse in my riding program for 21 years teaching thousands of lessons. It was tradition that everyone rode her in their first class. If they were beginners, she taught them to ride and if they thought they knew how to ride but really didn't, she let me know. It was a privilege to work with her and to share her lovely long life.

Yvonne Sekyra, Northwood Farm
Today we are deeply saddened. April 29th my mother, Yvonne Sekyra, passed suddenly while at the barn doing what she loved. Thank you to everyone that was there to help and support us. Please pray for us as we grieve the loss of a wonderful mother, wife, grandmother and friend. I am truly humbled by the support we have received and thankful for my Northwood Farm Family and all of you who reached out. We are truly blessed for your friendship .. Thank you.

Erin Baker wrote: “I’m really glad we're all such a tight-knit group up there [the Northwood Farm]. Sally and I went up yesterday and nearly every client (past and current) was out at the barn helping Tracy and swapping stories."

Yvonne Sekyra operated Northwood Farm as a full service Morgan horse facility located in Buckley, Washington, just a 20 minute drive from Seattle and featuring a glorious view of Mt. Ranier. The farm is owned by Michael & Yvonne Sekyra and offered breeding, training, instruction and sales in all disciplines.

Raised on a large farm in Canada, Yvonne grew up raising, training and showing Saddlebreds and Hackney horses. This later evolved into a successful career training Morgan horses. She also had experience working with various disciplines including Hunters, Jumpers, Dressage and Reining horses in several different breeds. Her knowledge throughout the equine world was vast and expansive, with many years of hands-on experience to her credit. Yvonne moved to Washington State in the late 1980s and built a reputation of honesty and integrity throughout her years in the horse industry. Most of her clients stayed with her an average of 10 years, but many were with her twice that long and introduced second and subsequent generations to her.

Yvonne was an avid campaigner for the Morgan breed. She participated in everything from Breyer horse exhibitions to the Seattle Pancho Auction, as well as the prestigious Spruce Meadows Masters exhibition. She also exhibited in mall shows at the West Edmonton Mall (one of the largest malls in the world) to promote saddle seat breeds. Additionally, Yvonne prided herself in introducing non-Morgan horse owners to the breed.

The riders and horses she has taught and/or trained have won countless championships at local, regional and world level shows. Yvonne specialized in providing instruction to amateur and junior exhibitor competitors and their equine partners. Yvonne trained the 2010 World Champion AMHA Youth of the Year, the 2009 and 2008 Reserve Champions, and also the USEF Junior Sportsmanship Award recipient.

There are no words to say how shocked we are at losing Yvonne and how much our Morgan community will miss her. Our prayers go out to her family, clients, and many friends.
