Kids books we're reading

Living in a "perfect" world without social ills, a boy approaches the time when he will receive a life assignment from the Elders, but his selection leads him to a mysterious man known as the Giver, who reveals the dark secrets behind the utopian façade.

A silly chapter book that propels you to learn real facts about the amazing Amelia Earhart.

The book's hero, a blob of color with arms, legs, and a face, bids readers not to read the book, not to make a funny face, etc., all the while getting very flustered and mentioning rules that must be followed.

Cece makes a startling discovery. With the Phonic Ear she can hear her teacher not just in the classroom, but anywhere her teacher is in the school -- in the hallway ... in the teacher's lounge ... in the bathroom! This is power, maybe even superpower. Cece is on her way to becoming El Deafo, listener for all. But the funny thing about being a superhero is that it's just another way of feeling different ... and lonely. Can Cece channel her powers into finding the thing she wants most, a true friend?

This biography of a famous pop artist is really interesting and fun. It’s very colorful, and we learn about how much Keith loved painting with children.

Teen books we're reading

While on a mission to Antarctica to save the world from global warming, fourteen-year-old Maximum Ride and the other members of the Flock -- a band of genetically modified children who can fly -- are pursued by their creator, the Uber-Director, who wants to auction them off to the highest bidder.

Emmie has had a crush on her best friend's brother, Deacon, for years, and although he is the town bad boy, she is sure he is innocent of a violent assault on his father except for one thing -- his own sister believes Deacon is guilty.

In a small South Carolina town, where it seems little has changed since the Civil War, 16-year-old Ethan is powerfully drawn to Lena, a new classmate with whom he shares a psychic connection and whose family hides a dark secret that may be revealed on her 16th birthday.

The summer following her father's death, Macy plans to work at the library and wait for her brainy boyfriend to return from camp, but instead she goes to work at a catering business where she makes new friends and finally faces her grief.
