MAKE A DIFFERENCE
At last week's school board meeting, ELA subcommittee members said they plan to conclude their fact-finding this month, and a vote on literacy could be put before the full board in the very near future.
It is crucial that every board member understands the perspective of the community, so please use all of the following email addresses to contact current and potential HPISD Trustees:
sharpet@hpisd.org, kellys@hpisd.org, ellisj@hpisd.org, herrine@hpisd.org, woodwad@hpisd.org, bonfiem@hpisd.org, bensonb@hpisd.org, ellenlee4hpisd@gmail.com, vote@tylerforhpisd.com, spencer@jetsurety.com
To familiarize yourself with the issue before sending your email, read over our website, look at the work your student is doing in their ELA class, or even just Google "Lucy Calkins controversy." Email us any questions you have about literacy and we will send you resources or connect you with someone who can answer your questions.
If you need help composing an email to the board, below is a sample message that you're welcome to use.
I support efforts to remove balanced literacy practices, including Lucy Calkins Units of Study and Fountas & Pinnell, from HPISD schools. Please provide leadership and resources so that students can benefit from new practices aligned to the Science of Reading in Fall 2022.
