Sixty Seconds with the Superintendent

Each week, we receive questions for the Superintendent from students in pre-K through 12th grade. In this video series, Ms. Beamon will answer these questions and help our families and the community we serve get to know the leader of our public schools.

SCPS Celebrates over 100 students with National Merit and College Board Recognition Program

Earlier this week, Seminole County Public Schools was able to celebrate over 100 academically outstanding students. In fact, we so many students achieve these high honors this year resulting in having to move the ceremony to a larger venue to accommodate the celebratory program. This year, more than 180,000 students from all 50 states were eligible to apply for the College Board National Recognition Programs, which grant students with academic honors that can be included on college and scholarship applications.

Students may be eligible for the National Recognition Programs if they have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and have excelled on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT™ 10, or earned a score of 3 or higher on two or more AP® Exams—and are African American or Black, Hispanic American or Latinx, Indigenous, and/or attend school in a rural area or small town.

“We want to honor the hard work of these students through the College Board National Recognition Programs. This program creates a way for colleges and scholarship programs to connect directly with underrepresented students who they are hoping to reach. We hope the award winners and their families celebrate this prestigious honor and it helps them plan for their big future.” Tarlin Ray, Senior Vice President, BigFuture, College Board

Seminole County Public Schools Remains #1 in STEM Career Prep in State of Florida

Article by Paul Cottle, Bridge to Tomorrow, FSU Physics Professor

When it comes to establishing a culture of STEM excellence in a school district, there is no substitute for great math and science teachers and excellent leadership at the school and district levels.

But that statement neglects the critical role that parents play in establishing such a culture. In the spring of 2022, I had a powerful lesson in the parent culture that forms the foundation of STEM excellence in Seminole County, which is Florida’s STEM superpower.

Which school district is best preparing students for college STEM majors this school year? It’s no surprise that it’s Seminole County. Parents there wouldn’t have it any other way.
