New Beginnings
by Rev. Jennifer Latham
Outside my office door is a large crown flower shrub. A week ago I saw a few children inspecting it; they had noticed monarch butterfly caterpillars crawling along its branches and leaves and were excited to see them eating the leaves. The next day, I saw a chrysalis hanging from one of the window frames in the double doors to my office. Carefully opening the other door, I said a quick prayer for safety for this chrysalis and the creature that was transforming within it. “Please, God,” I prayed, “let this little one transform and develop into the unique creature you have designed.”
My daily observation of the chrysalis hanging on my door offers me a chance to slow down and consider this time of transformation for this tiny creature. I know that soon, God-willing, a butterfly will start to emerge. It will eventually fly away and go on to pollinate and help fruit develop. The time of transformation when it is a chrysalis, however, can feel full of risks. There are many things that could go wrong: predators, wind, rain, and other dangers. And yet, the caterpillars always trust that making the chrysalis is the thing to do, despite the risks.
Here at Holy Nativity we are in a time of transformation, too. We may feel uncertain during times of transformation because things are changing, new things are being formed. At our Annual Meeting we talked about the past year and planned for the upcoming one and shared hopes and dreams for the future, for our 75th anniversary, for our worship, school, thrift shop, and community center. There is great potential for us during this time. We are loved so well and deeply by God, our Father, who asks us to trust and have faith. Jesus teaches us to live without fear because we always have the Holy Spirit to guides us. My prayer at this time is similar to the one I said for the caterpillar, “Please, God, let us transform and develop into the unique community you invite us to be.”
