Women's History Month:
NASA's Hidden Figures
The Unsung Women You Need to Know - The movie 'Hidden Figures' celebrates the African American women who worked as NASA's "human computers."

For decades, female NASA employees dubbed "human computers" helped the United States excel in the space race, but yet their critical contributions remained largely unacknowledged, not only outside NASA but within it.

The movie Hidden Figures introduces three of these women: Mary JacksonKatherine Johnson and Dorothy Vaughan. While their stories are compelling, the work of their colleagues who still remain in history’s shadows was also of great importance. Here are a few of the other Black women of NASA you need to know who served during the “Hidden Figures” era. Click here to read about these women from that era from Biography.com.
LRS Receives $5,000 Donation
from New Burlington Store
Burlington Stores, the national off-price retailer, through its partnership with the national non-profit organization, AdoptAClassroom.org, has generously donated $5,000 towards school supplies to Roxbury Township’s Lincoln/Roosevelt School in celebration of its new store now open at The Shops at Ledgewood Commons in Roxbury Township.

A representative from AdoptAClassroom.org contacted school administrators and helped to secure the donation for Lincoln/Roosevelt. The $5,000 donation will be distributed evenly to each teaching staff member at the school to use in their classrooms.

Building and district-level administrators were on hand this morning at the store to take part in Burlington’s official ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“As the Superintendent of Roxbury Public Schools and on behalf of the Board of Education and Administration, we would like to welcome Burlington to the community. Roxbury is a special place where we work to support each other and Burlington has already illustrated their commitment to the students with their generous grant of $5,000 to the Lincoln/Roosevelt School. We are certain our teachers will make good use of the funds to differentiate instruction in their classrooms and we are grateful for the partnership with Burlington,” said Loretta Radulic.

“Our teachers are so excited to purchase the tools they need, whether teaching in the classroom or from home. We are thankful for the support we received from Burlington and AdoptAClassroom.org,” shared LRS Principal Chris Argenziano. “Through this process, we learned that each time Burlington opens a new store, Burlington celebrates by adopting and funding a local elementary school in the market. Burlington is committed to supporting education through its partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org and we are fortunate to be the recipients of their generosity.” Click here to read more on our website, under "In the News".

Roxbury Interact Club Hosts Field Day & Water Sale
You can buy a case of water for less than five bucks, but a better idea is to buy one for $25 from the Roxbury High School Interact Club. That’s because the club, an offshoot of the Roxbury Rotary Club, is selling the admittedly overpriced cases of water as a fundraiser for Roxbury Social Services. The plan, according to Rotarian Steve Alford, is to help the needy keep up with the rising cost of gas.

“Social Services desperately needs $25 gas cards,” Alford said. “Gas prices are going up, and it’s getting harder (for the less fortunate) to afford gas.”

Interact Club decided to help Social Services by selling cases of water supplied by the Rotary Club. The goal is to raise $1,500 at the March 27 sale and buy gas gift cards that will be given to Social Services.

The water sale is scheduled to take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Eyland Avenue in Succasunna. Wanting to make the fundraiser more exciting, the Interact Club members decided to turn the water sale into a fun event for kids: A “field day” mini-carnival that will have games-of-chance and refreshments for sale. RHS Performing Arts Presents Godspell this Spring
Roxbury High School is proud to present its 2021 Spring Musical production of Godspell, conceived by John-Michael Tebelak with music by Stephen Schwartz. This immensely successful rock opera was first produced on Broadway in 1971, where it broke new ground in its stage treatment of the historical Jesus Christ. Based on the Gospel according to St Matthew, it deals with the last days of Jesus, and includes dramatized versions of several well-known parables. And yet it is something more - a spiritual experience, a demonstration of joy, and a celebration of the family of man. The cast are ordinary people, improvising scenery and costumes, and using many well-known theatrical devices, pantomime, vaudeville and varied musical styles to interpret one of humanity's greatest stories.

Due to the ongoing health crisis, the Roxbury High School Performing Arts Department are only able to offer live performances to close family and friends of cast members. However, the production will be available for public viewing through an online streaming event scheduled for March 26, 27, and 28th. These are scheduled streams and must be watched on the date and time specified. You can order your passcode to watch the online stream by clicking here or by scanning the QR code on the attached flyer. Passcodes will be usable on one digital device only.

We hope you are able to join us for this theatrical event!

A Late Start, but a Good One, for Roxbury Volleyball
Delayed six months due to COVID-19, the Roxbury High School volleyball team’s season got off to a good start this week with a victory Tuesday over Mount Olive. The 2-1 win saw senior Hayley Miller rack up 12 service points while classmate Juliana Medini and junior Isabella Chan both scored nine. Chan was also credited with making 15 digs and sophomore Victoria Latino chalked up 13 kills. Click here to read more from TAPinto Roxbury.

Morris/Sussex light weight wrestlers to watch heading into the 2021 season
The wrestling strength in Morris and Sussex counties could very well be down low this season. The area returns a trio of state champions in Kinnelon's Evan Mougalian, Hanover Park's Joey Olivieri and Parsippany's Sydney Petzinger, and eight more light weight wrestlers come back with a state medal. A season ago, Morris/Sussex had three separate wrestlers reach the podium at 106 pounds and four more medal at 132 pounds, so there is reason to believe that there will be plenty of wrestlers in contention between 106 and 145 pounds this season. Here are some of the light weight wrestlers from both counties who could be in contention for a deep run heading into the 2021 season from the New Jersey Herald.

Gaels Going Green
Did you know...
Since 2016, the Roxbury Township Public Schools has been striving to become more sustainable and green in its policies and practices. The Board of Education and administration made the decision to pursue district sustainability and green initiatives by creating and approving policies and regulations outlining its position and efforts.

To that end, all seven schools in Roxbury Township attained Bronze certification through Sustainable Jersey for Schools in August 2018 and now we are striving to renew that certification and attain the next level, Silver! In this section, you will find various green initiatives, events, and tips to live a healthier, greener life. Click here for more information regarding our sustainability initiative.
KES Student Spotlight: Victoria's Tips, Tricks, and Facts to Help Save our Planet by Recycling
As our minds continue to be filled with thoughts and uncertainties about the pandemic. Victoria Phelan Fonseca, a 4th-grade student at Kennedy School in Mrs. Leister's class, has bigger concerns about the lasting effects of pollution, especially plastics filling our landfills, environments, and oceans. Plastics are destroying our oceans and the habitats that millions of sea animals call home. Each week Victoria will be giving tips, tricks, and facts to all Roxbury families so we can help slow this effort and continue to raise awareness on this important crisis.

This week's tips, tricks, and facts is:
Americans use 85 million tons of paper per year which is about 680 pounds per person

Check out Victoria's past tips, trips, and facts on our website here.
Idle Free Schools - Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!
Winter is wrapping up! Thank goodness! Before it's going though, we wanted to share this important quick PSA.

In January 2019, the Roxbury Board of Education began supporting an idling reduction campaign at the Roxbury Schools, which included an idling reduction policy.

Part of the policy included the following bullet points. All those in bold and in red are what our transportation department and district have already been doing. Not bad and we're on our way to better!
  • Turn off school bus engines while waiting to load and to unload students
  • Turn off vehicles when parents are parked and waiting to pick up and drop off children
  • Installing "idle-free zone" signs at school drop-off and pick-up locations
  • Use the newest buses for the longest routes and maintain buses properly to eliminate any visible exhaust
  • Complete school-bus driver training on eliminating idling
  • Encourage parent, student, faculty, and staff drivers to turn off their engines after 10 seconds if they plan to remain at a location for more than 30 seconds, particularly at school drop-off and pick-up times.

Did you know that if everyone in the U.S. stopped idling for 5 minutes a day, it would be equivalent to taking five hundred thousand cars off the road saving 1.6 Million tons of CO2? Roxbury Schools are continuing to support this campaign to reduce student's exposure to air toxics that are emitted from idling vehicles.

We encourage our families and staff to sign pledge forms saying that they won't idle unnecessarily. You will see idling signs posted outside the school. Save money and protect the air by turning off your car when waiting more than 10 seconds. Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!

Let's all work together for a cleaner future! Follow our initiative online here!
School Community Asset Map - You Can Help!
As part of our initiative to maintain Sustainable Jersey for Schools certification, we continuously need to update our Community Asset Map. This is a collective inventory of the positive and valued aspects of a community by identifying the places, institutions, programs, and people that contribute to making our communities great places to learn and live.

Community assets can include information on local artists, scientists, and other experts, parks, local historic buildings, and green businesses, but can also include resources like cultural activities and events, arts, cultural and service organizations, social service agencies, and community organizations that are part of the great community context.

We've come up with over 700 businesses, restaurants, educational institutions, medical facilities, transportation hubs, and community organizations since 2018, but we need your help up in updating this list as we know things are ever-changing.

Please take a few minutes and jot down a few places and/or groups that you can think of to help round out our list. Click here for more information regarding the Roxbury Community Asset Map and how you can contribute.

NJ Human Services Extends COVID-19 Child Care Assistance Programs Through End of School Year

The state will be extending several COVID-19-related child care assistance programs for families and providers through the end of June 2021. As part of the public health emergency, the state launched the New Jersey School-Age Tuition Assistance Program to help families pay for care for their school-age child in need of child care as a result of COVID-19 remote learning schools schedules.

For families who have been approved for School-Age Tuition Assistance, payments for your child’s care will now continue through June 30, 2021. No new applications are being accepted.

If you need help paying for child care, you can apply for the state’s Child Care Subsidy Program. To give you a sense of whether you would be eligible for the Child Care Subsidy Program, the income maximum for a family of four is $52,400 annually. Use our calculator to see if you are likely to be eligible or visit our parent page to learn more about this program. If you need help finding child care, contact your local Child Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R) Agency. Families can apply online at www.ChildCareNJ.gov.
