Note From Principal Atkins

Stedman Families,

Happy November (and a belated Happy Halloween and Dia de los Muertos)! We had so much fun celebrating this week, and I hope you got a chance to watch our front office Halloween video because it's worth the minute out of your day to see "Coach Prime" making an appearance at Stedman! Thank you for coming out to the costume parade, it was a joyful time as always.

Next Friday, November 10th, Stedman students do NOT have school. This Stedman Day is used by our staff for professional development. Please don't forget to mark your calendars.

There was a typo in last week's newsletter about the Thanksgiving Lunch here at school - the date is Thursday, November 16th. This is a chance for families to join their student during lunch and is hosted all over DPS, please purchase your ticket from the main office before November 10th if you plan to join (more details below).

Sunday is Daylight Savings time! Be sure to set your clock back an hour and try to enjoy that extra hour of sleep.

Don't forget, as the temperatures are dropping, we want to make sure everyone is aware of our weather policies. For drop-off, when the temperature is below 27 degrees or when rain/snow is significant, students will gather inside to wait for the bell. Above 27 degrees, students will still wait outside for the bell so be sure to arrive as close to 9:10am as possible or bundle your child up appropriately. (Please remember that we do NOT have supervision on our playground until 8:55am for our K-5 students. Please do not drop off students before that time.) This is the same temperature threshold for outdoor recess. While adults may find that chilly, our students overwhelmingly prefer to have recess outside, and we know how important physical activity is during the day for our young people. On days where there is snow on the ground, please be sure to send your student with appropriate shoes/boots and gloves. If you do not have access to any, please reach out to alison_larson@dpsk12.net or Ms. Rhonda so we can support you.

The District utilizes weather delays/late starts when there is significant weather, so make sure you check your texts or our social media when inclement weather is happening.

Don't forget to check out the rest of this newsletter, particularly for updates to our visitor process and photos from the week. I hope everyone has a wonderful Fall weekend.

Sincerely,

Michael Atkins

NOVEMBER IS NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH

National Native American Heritage Month is celebrated each year in November. It is a time to celebrate the traditions, languages and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities and ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation. This November and every month, we celebrate the culture and heritage of these remarkable Americans who deeply enrich the quality and character of our Nation. We celebrate Indian Country with its remarkable diversity of Indigenous and Alaska Native cultures and peoples.

Several years ago, we collaborated on a Land Acknowledgement for the Stedman website. Did you know that if you text 907-312-5085 with your zip code, you will receive a response with the Indigenous lands you are on? In the area of 80207 -where Stedman is- you are on Arapaho, Cheyenne, Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute), and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ land. More info: land.codeforanchorage.org.

Do you know what a land acknowledgement is, why it is important and how to incorporate the practice into your own life? The Native Governance Center shares this handy Guide to Indigenous Land Acknowledgement..

If you’re unsure about the Indigenous Peoples land you are living on, you can search your location using Native Land, a growing database that documents traditional territories, languages, and treaties worldwide. This resource is also available as an app for your phone or tablet.

Other resources include Tribal Nations Maps, a source of hard copy maps that identify the traditional lands of Tribes in North and South America and the Caribbean, and the Smithsonian’s digital archive of treaties made between the United States and Indigenous Tribes.

Update for Visitors

Starting on Monday, 10/30/23, we will be implementing the use of our Raptor Visitor Management system to ensure the continued safety for all of the students and staff. This system is being used across DPS.

What's changing?

  • First time you visit the building, you will be required to have a photo ID (passport or driver's license)
  • Returning visits, you will NOT have to have an ID to enter, we will look your name up in the system and be able to print a new visitors passes and run new reports.

DPS Visitor Access Guidelines

  • All visitors must enter DPS buildings through the main entrance.
  • All visitors are required to have their identification scanned by the Raptor Visitor Management System. Please read Board of Education policies on School Visitors and Public Conduct on School Property
  • Pre-approved community partners will continue to have access to DPS schools. A DPS community partner is defined as those organizations providing staff and student support to our schools. Examples of DPS community partners may include private duty nurses, Boys and Girls Club of Denver, etc.
  • Reminder: FREE Volunteer background check: https://equity.dpsk12.org/get-involved/volunteer-services/
