NORTH CAROLINA VACCINE ROLLOUT
|
North Carolina is continuing the transition to Phase 1B of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout plan. The state is working on administering doses to residents who are 75 years of age or older.
Wake County hospitals such as WakeMed are preparing for Phase 1B to help people 75 and older get the COVID-19 vaccine. Wake County Public Health officials want to begin the process on Jan. 19. A phone number to set up an appointment will be set up later in the week. People will also be able to arrange an appointment online.
The vaccine used for Phase 1B needs two shots for protection.
The Phase 1B rollout will start in other parts of the area this week as well. Cape Fear Valley Health, the Moore County Health Department and the Lenoir County Livestock Arena will host COVID-19 vaccination clinics in the coming days. Last week, people flocked to COVID-19 vaccination clinics throughout the state. Local health organizations are hoping to streamline the process.
In Raleigh this week, COVID-19 testing clinics will be held at Biltmore Hills Park and Buffaloe Road Athletic Park. Ting Park in Holly Springs will also be a testing site. No appointment is necessary.
President-elect Joe Biden will receive his second dose of the vaccine on Monday.

COVID 19 DIRECTIVE BY SECRETARY COHEN
|
- The Directive strongly recommends citizens stay at home other than for essential activities – i.e. necessary travel for work, education, shopping for necessities, or to seek health care or provide care to others.
- The Directive also recommends avoiding any gathering other than persons you live with.
- Although the Directive is not legally enforceable like the Executive Order is, it is strong advice and it is important for the Town to continue to align with and model the recommended behavior.

NATIONAL SLAVERY AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING PREVENTION MONTH
|
|
My Message:
January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention month. This annual observance first began by presidential proclamation in 2011 and seeks to bring prevention through awareness and education on human trafficking.
This hidden form of victimization is often seen in three forms: forced labor, domestic servitude, and sex trafficking. A few common indicators that should be reported are:
- Does the person appear to be disconnected from family, friends, community organizations, or places of worship?
- Is the person disoriented or confused, or showing signs of mental or physical abuse?
- Does the person have bruises in various stages of healing?
- Is the person fearful, timid, or submissive?
- Does the person show signs of having been denied food, water, sleep, or medical care?
- Is the person often in the company of someone to whom he or she defers? Or someone who seems to be in control of the situation, e.g., where they go or who they talk to?
.
#WearBlueDay and #MorrisvilleWearsBlue.
Please join me and the Police Department to kick of this month and bring awareness to this issue! Together we can make a difference!

GOVERNOR COOPER BEGINS SECOND TERM/COUNCIL OF STATE SWORN IN
|
Watch Ceremony:
Gov. Roy Cooper and the Council of State were sworn in on Saturday, but ceremonies looked different because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Lt. Governor Mark Robinson, Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey, State Treasurer Dale Folwell, Agricultural Commissioner Steve Troxler, Labor Commissioner Josh Dobson, State Auditor Beth Wood, NC State Superintendent Cathy Truitt all took the Oath of Office! We wish all of them well as they get to work.
|
|
The inaugural ceremony streamed online, with North Carolinian performers and politicians speaking virtually in various locations. Attendance was limited to only participants, their families, staff and a few media members for safety reasons.
Five-term Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler was the only council member who didn’t attend in person because of virus concerns, a campaign spokesperson said. The program aired Troxler’s recorded swearing-in.
In Cooper's second inaugural address, he focused on the resiliency needed to get through the pandemic. On the day of his address, the state hit a new record of more than 11,000 new coronavirus cases.
“This new year and this new term as Governor is more than just turning the page of a calendar," Cooper said. "The lessons we’ve all learned must usher in a new era."
He also committed to taking on racial injustice and getting health care for all North Carolinians. Reflecting on the recent riots at the U.S. Capitol, the Democratic governor said they could not be justified.
"We can acknowledge and work around our differences while refusing to sacrifice truth and facts at the altar of ideology," Cooper said. "Let’s cast aside notions of red counties or blue counties and recognize that these are artificial divisions. Let’s place integrity at the forefront."
My family and I are grateful for Governor Cooper and his hard work, moving forward. We really do look forward to his wonderful efforts!

NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT APPRECIATION
|
Saturday was National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
Please join me in thanking all Law Enforcement Officers across the state and nation.
On a personal note, I am very proud of our Police Chief Patrice Andrews, and our Department in Morrisville for all they do. She is the right Chief for this time in our Towns' history and represents one of the greatest additions to our staff in the last decade.
This picture was pre Covid and taken when our Department received accreditation last year!
Keep up the great work!
National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day!

2021 BOND REFERENDUM INPUT
|
Council is interested in learning how you would best invest tax-supported dollars on major capital improvements to make a difference in our growing community. Capital improvements are major large scale one-time investment projects requiring a form of debt financing to afford. They are not annual recurring operational expenses such as salaries, supplies, programs or professional services.
Please provide your input using the bond portal below to help in the development of ballot questions or project categories for the Morrisville 2021 Bond Referendum. Comments received through the portal will be included in the public record and provided to the Town Council. This is a input portal only. Town staff is not responding to individual comments or questions submitted using this form. If you have specific questions or need clarification related to the bond referendum, please email jhooks@townofmorrisville.org.
