Assistant Dean Matt Tidwell has been re-elected to the board of directors for the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). IABC is the largest global association for communicators with about 9,000 members on multiple continents. Tidwell will begin his three-year term at IABC's World Conference in New York in June. William Allen White Day and Scholarships and Awards this week |
Please join us Thursday, April 21, for William Allen White Day and our annual Scholarships and Awards Ceremony. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who has won multiple Emmy awards as chief medical correspondent for CNN and host of the CNN podcast “Chasing Life,” will receive the 2022 William Allen White Foundation National Citation and give an address. Gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon, plays an integral role in CNN’s reporting on health and medical news. Immediately after Gupta's address, J-School scholarship and award recipients and donors will be recognized. The event starts at 3 p.m. in the Kansas Union Ballroom. Read the news release.

J-School student chosen to receive Inez Y. Kaiser PRSA scholarship |
Junior Ladazhia Taylor is a recipient of the Inez Y. Kaiser Greater Kansas City Public Relations Society of America Memorial Scholarship. Taylor is president of the Journalism Student Ambassador program and served as a 2021 Chair Member of the Diversity and Equity Inclusion Funds committee. She was one of two area college students to receive the scholarship, which is in recognition of Inez Kaiser’s national legacy as the first Black woman to join PRSA in 1966 and the 75th anniversary of PRSA.

Great Plains Journalism Awards finalists |
University of Kansas students are finalists in five categories of the Great Plains Journalism Awards. Students from Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota can enter the contest, which is administered by the Tulsa Press Club.
Emma Pravacek is a finalist for Student Photographer of the Year; Matthew Unrein is a finalist for Student Designer of the Year; and Keegan Hewitt is a finalist for Student Broadcaster of the Year. In addition, the University Daily Kansan staff is a finalist for best student news website and the KUJH news show from Dec. 1, 2021, is a finalist for best college news broadcast. All finalists will be honored and the winners named at an event in Tulsa on May 6.

Several students were honored April 9 by the Society of Professional Journalists Region 7 as finalists in the annual Mark of Excellence Awards. Region 7 covers Kansas, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska.

The J-School Recognition Ceremony for 2022 doctoral, master's and bachelor degree graduates is Saturday, May 14, at 8:30 a.m. in the Lied Center. Junior Lily Becker has been selected as the White House Correspondents’ Association’s 2022 scholarship recipient from the University of Kansas. Becker is an associate producer, multimedia journalist and anchor for KUJH News and has experience as a news correspondent, photojournalist and copy editor for the University Daily Kansan. Scholarship recipients will be featured at a luncheon and program in their honor in Washington, D.C., on April 29 and will be guests of the WHCA at its annual dinner on April 30.
The Kansas Association of Broadcasters and the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Foundation (KABF) offers up to $16,000 in collegiate scholarships each year. The deadline to apply is May 1. Learn more here.

Are you a doctoral student interested in health communication research? Associate Professor Mugur Geana has a Graduate Research Assistant position available for Fall 2022 to work on his NIH-funded project as well as to conduct research at CEHCUP. The GRA position includes full tuition support, a stipend and fringe benefits. Applications are open to all doctoral students in our program, including those starting their first year of study. Associate Professor Mugur Geana's paper "We Trust What We Think We Know: Knowledge Overconfidence Is Associated With Anti-Consensus Views on Controversial Scientific Issues" received a Top Paper Award from ICA's Communication Science and Biology Division. On May 27, Dr. Geana will present his research during a special ICA panel dedicated to top papers in health communication at the 72nd Conference of the International Communication Association in Paris, France. Scientists from the University of Colorado, Portland State University, and Brown University collaborated in this multidisciplinary research exploring five controversial scientific topics from climate change to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Professor Hyunjin Seo will hold an Integrated Arts Research Initiative faculty fellowship at Spencer Museum of Art in Fall 2022. She will work with Spencer Museum staff, artists and scholars on an interactive visual artwork project at the intersection of technology, social justice and art.
Professor Hyunjin Seo gave a presentation on evidence-based COVID-19 vaccination campaigns at the Kansas COVID-19 Vaccine Equity Task Force meeting on April 13.
Multimedia Journalism Concentration Chair Lisa McLendon and Associate Professor Doug Ward wrote the entry on “Editing, Print media” for the newly published second edition of the SAGE Encyclopedia of Journalism.
Assistant Professor Rebekka Schlichting will be a panelist at 2 p.m. April 30 in Lincoln, Nebraska, at “Traditional Ways Through Food,” a discussion about strides to regain food sovereignty and return to the healthy, traditional life ways of Native people. Learn more here.
The J-School's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee announces a Call for Proposals for the 2022 DEIB Summer Research Award. The $5,000 research award, which is open to faculty and graduate students, aims to promote applied research in an area of mass communication science that can directly benefit our understanding, acknowledgment, interaction with, research and/or acceptance of diversity. Tom Murphy Fellowship application deadline is April 22 |
The deadline for students to apply for the temporary account executive position through the Tom Murphy Fellowship at Octagon is 5 p.m. April 22. Virtual interviews are planned for April 28 and April 29 with a representative from Octagon, a global sports, entertainment and experiential marketing arm of the Interpublic Group. Kings' Court student documentary to premiere May 2 |
Students in JOUR 636 are premiering their short documentary about the nationally ranked basketball team, the Kansas City Kings, at 6:30 p.m. May 2 at the Burge Union, Forum B. Following practices, games and team gatherings, this documentary captures the ups and downs of basketball and heartfelt aspects of the community. This spring, the Kings traveled to Wichita to compete in the national tournament where the team discovered new meanings to basketball royalty. Register here.
