The Nonprofit Connection
Email Header for handsOn Constant Contact
Greetings!

August! Some kids are back in school already, while others are getting ready to go back soon. It's a time of transitions and looking ahead, but we've found planning to be difficult this month, with local COVID cases and hospitalization cases spiking. As we have found to be true since last March--it's hard to plan during a pandemic! Many of our partners, eagerly looking ahead to in-person events, have decided to pause and reassess. What will the fall bring, with children under 12 still unable to be vaccinated? Will this truly be behind us in 2022? I wish I had a crystal ball, but, alas, prognostication skills are not my strong suit.

All I can say is that HandsOn will be with you on this ever-continuing journey. We're looking ahead to the launch of our 2021-2022 Women's Emerging Leaders cohort later this month, finalizing the dates of our 2021-2022 Nonprofit Essentials series (tentative dates are on our website), and putting the finishing touches on a new coaching program and technical assistance cohort geared towards BIPOC-led nonprofits. More details about each of these new programs will be released in a series of dedicated emails in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, we're excited to be welcoming new team members! The search is on for a new Program Coordinator position, and we were happy be able to bring Casey Capstick onto our permanent staff as our new Development and Marketing Coordinator after she finished her year of VISTA service with us last week. Robert Gifford is our new AmeriCorps VISTA member from Wake Forest University's Community Action Coalition and he'll be taking over Casey's former duties in regards to GetConnected and some of our other volunteer and partner engagement work. Many of you may have already gotten an email from him, and I know that he's eager to learn more about your organizations and begin supporting your engagement efforts.

As always, the only way out is through. While the through is longer than many of us expected or wanted, I remain convinced there will finally be an out at the end of this pandemic--and we'll still be here, doing our best to help you do you your best!

Be well,

Amy

Amy Lytle
Executive Director

Ed note: Do you want to share your love of HandsOn with our network? We're always on the lookout for guest columnists in future newsletters--just let let Amy know!
Meet Robert Gifford--Our NEW AmeriCorps VISTA Member!
We're excited to welcome Robert to our team as our newest AmeriCorps VISTA member from Wake Forest University's Community Action Coalition. Now well into his second week, Robert will be taking over many of Casey's current duties as she transitions into her new development and marketing role. This includes becoming our primary contact for our GetConnected portal.

Robert is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he received his bachelor’s degree in Geography with a concentration in Urban Planning. He first served as a VISTA with the Human Resource Development Council’s Community Café in Bozeman, Montana. He is returning for his second year as a VISTA to serve with HandsOn NWNC and is eager to begin working with our partners and volunteers!
Don't Forget to Submit Projects for the 9/11 Day of Service!
As best we can, the Youth Engagement Coalition has started planning for this year's 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance. We know that there will most likely be a high-level of volunteer interest to serve on this 20th anniversary year, and we're ready to work with our partners to help ensure a supply of a-quality projects. We know we're up against other factors, like the fact that it falls immediately after the Labor Day holiday weekend, and a home Wake Forest University football game at noon. But we also know that service on this day can be a meaningful way to recognize this important moment in our national history.

Strong service options for 9/11 Day include those that can be accomplished in a short-term time frame (a few hours, or over the course of a single day,) will engage at least a five member team working together, be virtual, remote, or in-person (with safety protocols in place,) and, ideally, will help build strong, more resilience communities. Any service project that will take place in the two weeks around 9/11 Day will be recognized as a 9/11 Day project, even if it doesn't happen on that Saturday. We still plan to honor the partners and the volunteers who participate in the 9/11 Day of Service during a special event that day--more details will be forthcoming.

If you need help developing service project ideas, or getting them up in GetConnected, don't hesitate to reach out to Robert!

Are You a Grassroots Group Interested in Redistricting Work? Please Let Us Know! With the final Census data being released this week, our friends at the NC Counts Coalition have reached out to us here at HandsOn to see if there is enough interest to hold a Triad-based virtual training series that would equip small, grassroots nonprofits with the information needed to provide effective, strategic communication to stakeholders, information about redrawing electoral maps, and how to best participate in public hearings. This three-part series would take place over the course of three evenings in a single week and would be offered in both English and Spanish. They'd like to know if at least five organizations are interested before moving forward. If your organization may be one of them, please let us know!

Tips For Nonprofits Considering Vaccination Requirements!
We know that many nonprofits in our network are considering what they can or should do in regards to vaccination requirements for both their staff and volunteers. With cases and hospitalizations rising in recent weeks due to the Delta variant, the calculus has gotten even more difficult for those organizations that want to provide their full range of services in as safe a manner as possible.

To answer one of the most common questions: it is legal for nonprofits to require their employees be vaccinated. Yet, we know the decision is more complicated than that. The NC Center for Nonprofits recently posted an analysis of the pros and cons of nonprofit vaccination mandates. The analysis also includes some tips for ways your organization can implement a policy in a way that is fair and effective and that minimizes potential liability. We appreciate the Center producing this guide for decision-making!

HandsOn NWNC Helps Scopes Projects for Lowe's 100 Hometowns Initiative!

In celebration of Lowe’s centennial, the company is supporting 100 communities in need across the country with 100 impact projects that were revealed late last month. Lowe’s combed through more than 2,200 submissions before arriving at the chosen 100, which spans 36 states.

In working to make the final decisions, Lowe's reached out to Points of Light and its affiliate network to help scope and research projects. As part of this work, HandsOn NWNC scoped more 7 different projects, both locally and virtually across the country. We're proud to say that four of these projects--including three in our local area, including those in East Bend, Wilkesboro, and North Wilkesboro--all received funding! (The Wilkesboro project was ultimately funded separately from the 100 Hometowns initiative.) We were honored to be part of the process, and look forward to working with the local project partners going forward. All the projects should be completed by the end of October.
