Pacific Update
Week of May 2, 2022
|
|
Hello!
In this issue, you will find information on upcoming swimming events and stories that will interest the swimming community.
This Sunday, May 8, Mother's Day, is an opportunity to honor our moms, but also to recognize any maternal figures who have mentored or played a positive leadership role in our lives. Our swim coaches fall into that last category. Appropriately, this first week of May is also Pacific Masters' Annual Coach Appreciation Week. Take some time to say "thank you" to those who have helped navigate the watery pathways of our lives.
The USMS Spring National Championship is now behind us. It's time to look forward and prepare for our exciting summer calendar. Check out the Upcoming Events.
The next issue of the Update will appear on May 16, 2022. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, May 11, 2022.
Stay fit,
The Pacific Masters Swimming Committee

2022 Annual Coach Appreciation Week
May 1-7
Our coaches have always been the backbone of Pacific Masters, but never more so than during these past crazy years. Many of us depended on our coaches to keep us together as a community - even if we couldn't have regular workouts.
Whether it is providing stroke instruction, helping us stay injury free, or just keeping us sane, our coaches are an essential element of our swimming routine.
Despite their importance, it is easy to take our coaches for granted and forget to thank them for their efforts. For this reason, Pacific Masters Swimming established the Annual Pacific Masters Coach Appreciation Week designated as the week beginning with the first Sunday in May, this year, May 1-7.
While we encourage our members to regularly thank their coaches, please consider Coach Appreciation Week as an opportunity to let them know how much you value their efforts. Here are some ideas:
- A card or email telling the coach how their instruction helped you accomplish a goal
- A gift card for coffee, ice cream, a movie, or other treat
- Flowers, candy, book, wine, or whatever you think your coach may enjoy
- A massage or spa day
- A certificate for a weekend getaway or special meal

Help Pacific Masters Grow
Win a Pacific Masters Towel!
Swimming is one of the best exercises we can do for ourselves. Since word of mouth is the best advertising, tell everyone you know about Pacific Masters Swimming.
If you bring a friend to join your club and Pacific Masters, you can enter a monthly drawing for a Sports 20 in. X 36 in. microfiber towel. The towel will have the Pacific Masters logo on it and will tell other swimmers that you helped grow Masters Swimming.
Just get a new member, or bring back a swimmer who has not been a PacMasters swimmer in the past four years (2018-2021), to join Pacific Masters. Then enter their name, your name, and the club name at New Member Towel Drawing.
There will be a drawing for towels on the last day of the month, from April through October. If you bring in a new swimmer from March 1st, 2022 to the end of October, 2022, you are eligible for the drawing.
Good luck and thank you for spreading the word about the benefits of swimming, while helping to grow Pacific Masters!

Coach Certification, Level 2
Saturday and Sunday, May 14-15
Calling all coaches looking to achieve USMS Level 2 certification. The cost for the May 14-15 event is $125. Pacific Masters will reimburse 80% of the cost for all coaches who take this course and pass. According to Pacific’s 2022 Clubs Survey, it was found that clubs with 100+ members are staffed by men and women who have USMS Level 2 certification, or higher. Register HERE for the classroom session. The Clinic Course, to be held at the Rinconada pool in Palo Alto, has reached capacity.
We've had thirteen participants complete Level 1 Certification so far in the first quarter of 2022, equaling all certifications for 2020 and 2021. This is a great start! What would we do without our Coaches? Click here for a complete list of those who have completed this course: USMS Certified Coaches.
If you have Level 2, but need a refresher course, please hold your spot on our waiting list by contacting [email protected] - we will contact you in early May.

Interested in Hosting SCY Championships in 2023?
Our Pacific Masters Administrative Handbook itemizes the guidelines for selecting/recruiting Championship hosts in section 102.3.B(2).D. Pacific Masters is supposed to review all bids for Championships in our August meeting. In the past few years (even pre-pandemic), we have had to actively recruit hosts for our SCY and LCM meets, sometimes in an uncomfortably close time frame.
Pacific Masters now has a club that has expressed interest in hosting our 2023 Short Course Yards Championships in mid-April 2023. We would like to open the bidding early and have a deadline of June 1 instead of August 1, so we can respond to this club in a timely manner.
If your club is interested in hosting the Short Course Yards Championships for spring of 2023, please submit your request by using our Event Hosting Application Forms for pool meets no later than May 31, 2022.

Natalie Coughlin To Be Inducted Into
International Swimming Hall of Fame
Natalie Coughlin is a three-time Olympian and has earned 12 Olympic medals. In 2002, she was the first woman to swim the 100-Meter Backstroke, long course, in under a minute. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Natalie became the first US female athlete in modern Olympic history to win six medals in one Olympiad and the first woman ever to win a 100-Meter Backstroke Gold in two consecutive Games.
Born in Vallejo, California, she attended UC Berkeley, swimming for the Golden Bears under Coach Teri McKeever. Natalie's success earned her Swimming World Magazine's World Swimmer of the Year and American Swimmer of the Year, three times each. Hear more of Natalie's story.
Out of the pool, Natalie has taken on other challenges. In 2009, she competed in Dancing with the Stars. One of her favorite hobbies today is cooking. She has appeared on several different cooking shows and has authored her own cookbook: Cook to Thrive: Recipes to Fuel Body and Soul. In 2017, Natalie became involved in winemaking when she became a partner in Gaderian Wines in the Napa Valley.
She took time out from her busy schedule to preside as the key-note speaker at our Pacific Masters Annual Meeting and Celebration in 2017 and graciously stayed to help with the presentations to our Pacific Masters award winners. We are proud to recognize the accomplishments of one of our own. Congratulations, Natalie!
