ISRAEL

by Jo Strausz Rosen

From 2000 to 2008, I proudly worked on behalf of the Technion Institute of Technology as a director for the Detroit Chapter of the American Technion Society. Fundraising included shining the light on world-class lifesaving research and technology in every engineering field, from computers to electrical and mechanical engineering and every aspect of medical research add technology. Professors from the Technion came to America to share their research and many collaborations took place for the good of all mankind. I was fortunate to meet these incredible scientists and listened to and learned from their stories and histories of research. We used to meet in country clubs, office buildings, businesses and private homes in our communities and all around the country in support of Israeli research.

FRIENDS OF JSL

Join Us at Lives Well Lived

I have a confession to make – at this time of year, I find myself running to the mailbox every day to see who will be joining us for Lives Well Lived on Tuesday, November 14, at 7:00pm at The J.

We’re so excited about the book, about the films we’re presenting, about our tribute to filmmaker Sue Marx, our special guests Jack Lessenberry and Bill Haney, and, of course, honor our older adult authors! Add in the dessert pre-glow and free parking and all the great people who are coming and it’s going to be a very special evening.

Sponsorships and tickets are still available. You don’t even have to mail it (as much as I love getting mail). Just go to our Lives Well Lived page online.

Don't Write Me Off!

Get your copy of this amazing collection of stories by our residents at Lives Well Lived, in our boutique or on Amazon and find out all kinds of interesting facts about our residents. We have a resident who sky dives, one who was in the USO, one who had a police car burst into flames in her front yard. This collection of 39 stories will make you laugh, cry, and learn how to face aging with strength, resolve, heart, soul, and a great sense of humor.

Ready to Start Chanukah Shopping?

Our racks are stuffed with cozy sweaters and fall jackets – the perfect items for a walk around either one of our lovely campuses. New for fall, we have pajama sets. And if you want to do a little early Chanukah shopping, we have the perfect gift for grandkids, guys, and of course, all the gals on your list.

We’d Love to Have You Be Part of the JSL Community!

It’s always a great feeling to make someone’s day, and there are lots of opportunities to do that here. From the boutique to bingo to personal visits, we have so many ways you can use you time and interests to bring a smile to the faces of our residents. Please call me (Beth Robinson) at 248 592-5062 to talk about how you might become a vital part of JSL.

MUSIC NOTES AND NOSHING

Hechtman residents enjoyed an elegant fall party with apple cider, fresh doughnuts, and other treats. Horizon String Quartet, generously sponsored by the Ella Baker Fund, performed a unique selection of classical and popular music in an atmosphere of fall colors and foliage. Excited to celebrate fall, residents enjoyed the autumnal setting, music, and food.

A SUCCESSFUL

OPEN HOUSE

Tracey Proghovnick reported live from the JSL annual Open House on the West Bloomfield campus, last Sunday, October 24th. "It was a bright sunny day when we welcomed more than 25 families to the beautiful communities at Meer, Hechtman and Fleischman."

Guests were treated to lively entertainment, and delicious appetizers prepared by our culinary team. Visitors took tours of the buildings led by JSL staff, showcasing all of the recent updates at Hechtman Apartments including the new Dining Room, The Fireside Room, The Coffee Café, and at Fleischman, visitors toured the newly renovated living suites.

FRIDAY FUNNY

SHABBAT SHALOM

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

Days We Will Remember

“Behold the Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.” (Psalms 121). The recent unspeakable tragedy in Israel resounds deep in our hearts. We too cannot afford to slumber or sleep.

Out of 365 days of our Hebrew calendar year, the sacred and most joyous day, Simchat Torah was the day that Hamas cast their lot to perpetrate utter evil. Is this date random? I believe that the date of the tragedy is an important factor to consider.

The Yom Kippur War, the 9/11 horrific tragedy as well as the attack on our people on Simchat Torah are days that always stood out as memorable ones much before we ever associated tragedy with them. The precision of targeting these days with tragedy, I believe, is meant to remind us to intensify our actions related to the content and meaning of these days. We cannot afford to forget nor to become apathetic to the nature of these times.

Yom Kippur speaks to our sacredness. Simchat Torah represents our joy and unity. 9/11 is the number everyone knew in case of emergency to save a life.

Thus, there exists a moment of Yom Kippur within every mundane day of the year. There rings a tune of Simchat Torah’s utter rapture every day of our calendar year. There exists an urgent spiritual 9/11 call every single day to connect with the ultimate Guardian of Israel.

Let us be vigilant in focusing on these crucial moments of our lives. 1. Act holy. 2. Practice joy. 3. Fully respond to the urgent call to connect with your Maker and help another in need.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
