Spain and the Oscars: "TRISTANA"

7 pm | Thursday, November 9, 2023

This fall, as the Meadows Museum celebrates American enthusiasm for Spain in the exhibition Spanish Light: Sorolla in American Collections, DIFF is proud to collaborate on a selection of Spanish films that were considered for an Academy Award.

TRISTANA is often called Luis Buñuel’s most Spanish film. After the death of her mother, young Tristana goes to live with her guardian, Don Lope, an older man who eventually breaks through his façade of respectability and seduces her. When Tristana meets a young painter who falls in love with her, she decides to radically change the course of her life. Tristana was Spain’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for 1970.
