Orem is a GREAT place, with GREAT people, and there are GREAT things happening in Orem! I’ve seen plans for single-family home subdivisions—one with 20+ home lots, planned communities, and commercial office buildings.

In February, the City Council voted to stop high density housing on State Street and replaced it with commercial zoning opportunities that will provide jobs, strengthen our tax base and beautify the State Street corridor. Dillard’s opened its beautiful store. Our Senior Center is recognized as one of the best. Miss Orem, Claire Inouye, is working to bring the Sources of Strength program to schools. Orem Family Fitness Center is amazing. The SCERA provides great family entertainment and gives youth opportunities for work and personal development. The Orem Library hosted Día del Niño, including a cultural dance program, food and fun. There are great things happening in Orem, and our united efforts bring strength to our community.

An important aspect of the strength of our community is superior educational opportunities for our children. I’ve had the opportunity to visit many of our Orem schools to discuss the Orem School District Feasibility Study that is currently being conducted. As I’ve discussed the timeline and process of the study and answered questions from parents and educators, a take-away message has been the importance of seeking out accurate facts and information vs. some of the misinformation and opinions found on social media and elsewhere.

I’m grateful that parents and residents are engaging in this conversation, remaining unbiased, are willing to explore a study, and have a desire to seek out the best solutions. Exploring opportunities for our children’s education is a good conversation and helps discover what is best for children. Having served over 20 years in PTA and School Community Councils, I am a firm believer that education lifts and strengthens our community, open doors, and facilitates a bright future for our children and grandchildren. We owe it to children to explore all options. Orem is a GREAT community, let’s all work together in positive ways!
