Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland

Happy Summer!
I have been thinking about what would improve morale. We all want to do something collectively, but the truth is most of us are long overdue for true vacations with friends and family and it looks like many are taking time. I have been working on my own perspective. To be honest, the fact that this little swell of COVID-positive cases and the uptick in the wastewater is a little re-traumatizing. I honestly want to have a little amnesia about what we just went through. Forgetting is not healing but integrating the emotions can be helpful. I was out to dinner with some healthcare leaders from various local and statewide systems and we talked about a way to integrate what has happened over the last three years with stories, poetry, art, and just sharing. I invite you to submit via email any writings, old emails, or creative images that you would be okay with us sharing in a newsletter. The prompt is: “What I remember of the pandemic…”
You may or may not have masked faces, but you definitely have healing hands. It is regulatory season. So, wash them! Model good hand hygiene for your teams.
Being in a state of flow is critical for our healthcare delivery systems. Getting our patients to flow through our system is key. Getting your scholarly and educational programs to flow through the various processes is crucial. Look at our series of “All Faculty” webinars and “Faculty Seminars” that our office is hosting monthly to assist with your work. The old ones are hosted on our ever-improving website. The quarterly BCH Oakland All-Faculty Meeting is next Thursday, August 17th at 5:00 PM. The goal is to provide faculty with programmatic updates in education. The all-faculty meetings and seminar recordings are hosted on our website for those who are unable to attend.

Easier and Cheaper Access to Data for Health Services and Population Health Research
The Population Health Data Initiative, which is a collaboration of the Institute for Health Policy Studies, School of Medicine Tech, Population Health and Health Equity program, Center for Healthcare Improvement and Medical Effectiveness (CHIME), and UCSF Library, has continued to enhance the data available to UCSF researchers for health services and population health research.
Their services provide low-cost access to many datasets, support for establishing data use agreements, data storage, and programming support.

Release of the UCSF Changemaker Series | |
The UCSF Changemaker Series, created by Professor of Medicine Hilary Seligman, MD, MAS, is a four-part video series that seeks to build the capacity of UCSF researchers to generate scientific evidence that is responsive to the needs of real-world decision-makers. Each 10-15 minute video highlights a UCSF researcher in conversation with an interdisciplinary panel of non-academic experts discussing how investigators at all stages of their careers can more meaningfully inform policies, systems, and structures in order to create social or policy change.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION, and
ANTI-RACISM at UCSF BCH
| |
From Marsha J. Treadwell, PhD
DEI Co-Chair BCH Oakland
Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, UCSF School of Medicine

The focus of the BCH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative is to dismantle systemic racism within BCH by taking action to insure that policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms no longer reinforce and perpetuate racial group inequity for Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color. Patients and families and other groups in the workforce, including LGBTQ+ are negatively impacted within the current problematic climate. For more information, please feel free to reach out to me, our program manager Henry Ocampo at henry.ocampo@ucsf.edu, or visit our website https://diversitybch.ucsf.edu/.
