March 2022
The muddy (snowy, icy) month of March brings a host of very good reasons to visit the Northshire. Stomp off your feet and come on in.

Celebrate Women’s History month by considering some fresh new releases.
,
Suleika Jaouad’s inspiring memoir, Between Two Kingdoms, in which her diagnosis with and recovery from leukemia prompted an emotional cross-country trek, is just out in paperback. We hosted Suleika who hales from Saratoga Springs for an inspiring virtual event on the hardcover release which you can watch hereIn Defense of Witches: The Legacy of the Witch Hunts and Why Women Are Still on Trial, by Mona Chollet, is a feminist reclamation and celebration of women throughout history, including the present day, who have endured persecution. Upstairs on the children's level, check out Grammy Award-winning Alicia Keys’s Young Adult superhero graphic novel, Girl on Fire.

Old Ireland in Colour and Old Ireland in Colour 2, beautiful collections of color-restored images from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, show Ireland not in black and white or even in all-green but in full chromatic glory. These are great books for fully committed or casually observant Saint Patrick’s Day revelers.

As of this writing it does not feel like it but Spring is coming. It’s my favorite time of year in Vermont. I’m thinking about birds. We have flocks of books. I’m thinking about maple syrup. We have the books and the sugar. I’m thinking about flowers, trees, and baseball (in spite of the looming lockout). The books are busting out all over. In the children’s department, it might as well be spring because at this very moment you can browse colorful, well-stocked displays for springtime and Easter titles.

And to our customers who continue to visit and support us online, we thank you again and again.

Featured Release

In this brilliant selection of essays, the award-winning, best-selling author of The Handmaid's Tale and The Testaments offers her funny, erudite, endlessly curious, and uncannily prescient take on everything from debt and tech to the climate crisis and freedom and the importance of how to define granola.

In more than fifty pieces, Atwood aims her prodigious intellect and impish humour at the world, and reports back to us on what she finds. This roller-coaster period brought the end of history, a financial crash, the rise of Trump, and a pandemic. From debt to tech, the climate crisis to freedom; from when to dispense advice to the young (answer: only when asked) to how to what zombie have to do with authoritarianism, we have no better guide to the many and varied mysteries of our universe.

Pre-order Highlight

From one of the most celebrated writers of our time, a literary figure with cult status, a “sibling novel” to her Pulitzer Prize- and NBCC Award-winning A Visit from the Goon Squad—an electrifying, deeply moving novel about the quest for authenticity and meaning in a world where memories and identities are no longer private.

The Candy House is a bold, brilliant imagining of a world that is moments away. Egan takes to stunning new heights her “deeply intuitive forays into the darker aspects of our technology-driven, image-saturated culture” (Vogue). The Candy House delivers an absolutely extraordinary combination of fierce, exhilarating intelligence and heart.
