Road

As we drove home this past week from Colorado to Texas, we began hours before daylight and ended our journey late in the evening. So we saw the sunrise, sunset and all the in-betweens and nightfall. But as we were driving I couldn’t help but consider the many changes we experienced;  be it weather, scenery, mountains, road delays, valleys, meadows, small towns and work zones etc. We had a goal and kept our eyes not on the clock but on the destination.

I will admit that we have made this drive several times over the years and there is a “food” timeline (9:00 home made tacos for breakfast and 1:00 peanut butter sandwiches for lunch and after five just continued snacks)... our stops are generally only for gas and a stretch not only for us but for Lady, our lab.

But as I reflect back on our journey, it occurred to me that all those changes and variances are somewhat parallel to us in our daily lives.  We wake up each morning setting our goals for the day, and though we are familiar with the plans we have made, we never can be assured that there will not be unforeseen things that come our way.  Sometimes they are just minor inconveniences while other times we are totally detoured and are forced to forge a different route.

Prime example is Blake, one of my grandsons was in football practice early in the week and in just one move his knee popped and he was out for the end of week game.  All plans were now off the table because this was now priority; what happened, how bad is it, get into the doc’s office and is surgery on the horizon, etc. The answer is: wait and see how effective rest, ice and crutches are?  We all have been in that same situation where things happen and our daily itineraries are swiftly changed and we have to forge forward dealing confidently with whatever situation God has allowed to come our way. This is where we have to learn to be loose, to stay steady in our faith, but be resilient enough to adjust to whatever God allows to confront us on our journey.

There will be mountains to climb and valleys to overcome, but if we keep out eyes on the goal that God has set forth, our eternal and heavenly home, it is there that the time spent on this earth will be the journey that makes all those changes and trials we face and endure on the way, worthwhile.

Life is a daily walk; no promises that the our light passages will always outweigh some of our dark ones as we travel through this life, but God has promised us that no matter where we travel or when we travel the light of His son Jesus will always be traveling with us.  He will provide the direction, if we truly seek it, to get us through the delays, roadblocks and detours that we may be experiencing. And he too will open our eyes to see his blessings, and beauty and grace along our way.  God will bring us to a place of peace, comfort, love and the joy of adventure.

I know that sometimes we are hesitant to explore those adventures, and often times dread them, but they are something that keeps life afloat and infuses within us faith and trust that God’s promises are real and never changing even though the circumstances about us are constantly growing and changing us.  Just as we travel from one place to another, we may not realize it, but we too are traveling from one phase of growth to another, and though we set our goals on this earth, it is God who sets His goals for us. His goals are to build us up to be better, stronger, wiser and more reliant and faithful on his help. God is our trusted guide and when we follow the roadmap that he has offered, it is then that we become the very ones he has set out for us to be….in thought, in purpose and in deed.

Happy fall! Can’t believe September is already here….Blessings to each of you!!!

Praise God wherever you are and whatever situation He has allowed you to be in . . . His glory will shine through!
