Julian Abele was chief designer for Horace Trumbauer and the contributing designer of over 250 buildings including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Philadelphia's Free Library. Working decades before Civil Rights legislation, he overcame innumerable obstacles in a country gripped by segregation. Trained in the classical tradition at the University of Pennsylvania, Abele contributed to the design of Gilded Age mansions in Newport and New York, the Widener Memorial Library at Harvard, and much of the Duke University campus. Despite his incredible and prolific contributions, Abele was rarely publicly acknowledged for his work.
Hosted by designer and ICAA board member Barbara Eberlein, this new production features David Brownlee, architectural historian at the University of Pennsylvania, and Amy Cohen, great-grand niece of Abele’s longtime friend and collaborator Louis Magaziner, in a conversation that centralizes Abele in the history of classical tradition, a recognition long overdue.

In the new book, ROWDY MEADOW: House – Land – Art, Peter Pennoyer presents a visionary house designed and decorated by Peter Pennoyer Architects in Hunting Valley, Ohio, that will ultimately be bequeathed to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Inspired by Czech Cubism – an ephemeral early twentieth century movement notable for its exploration of prismatic forms – it is a house of tremendous complexity ruled by a calm mastery of the language of this style.
In this installment of ICAA Book Club, Pennoyer offers an in-depth look at making of this ambitious house and property as he explores the complex relationships between its architecture, interior design, furnishings, and collections of decorative and contemporary art.
