Monthly estimates for overall and industry employment are derived from the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program. Also known as the payroll survey, the CES is a federal and state cooperative program that provides timely estimates of civilian payroll employment by sampling the population of employers. These estimates are subject to both sampling and non-sampling error, so each year they are benchmarked to employment counts from a census of the employer population, derived primarily from data provided by companies in their unemployment insurance reports. They use this data to revise prior estimates and improve the quality of future estimates and are released each March.

The Chesapeake Bay watershed is getting a digital update to accurately represent land use and land cover (LULC) on the landscape. Land cover is created using aerial imagery and computer algorithms to classify the physical landscape into categories such as forests, grasslands, cropland, wetlands, or impervious surfaces. With additional input, land use can be derived which describes how the landscape is used or managed by humans with categories such as agriculture, residential development, commercial development, transportation, recreation, or conservation.

The Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization (HRTPO) has produced the Draft Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP) for fiscal year 2022, which begins on July 1, 2021. The UPWP describes transportation planning work to be performed for the Hampton Roads metropolitan planning area by the HRTPO, the local public transportation operators (Hampton Roads Transit, Williamsburg Area Transit Authority, and Suffolk Transit), and the Virginia Department of Transportation. All interested parties are encouraged to review the Draft FY 2022 UPWP and provide comments on this draft by April 21, 2021.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in partnership with the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) is collecting data associated with travel to and from work in response to COVID-19 in Virginia. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way people are traveling, including, to and from work. The purpose of the recurring Virginia Commuter Surveys is to understand how commutes are changing and identify opportunities to improve commuting during and after this pandemic.
