Black History in Medicine: Dr. Dyer’s Legacy in Macon
Dr. Crawford Wilfred Earnest Dyer was a native of Port of Spain, Trinidad, British West Indies. He attended Howard University and earned his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in 1915. Dr. Dyer opened offices in Macon, where he later founded St. Luke's Hospital in 1928. Dr. Dyer opened the hospital primarily because local Black doctors were not able to practice at the Macon Hospital due to racist policies of the time. Once the Macon Hospital became integrated, African Americans could branch out to other areas, leading to St. Luke’s closing in 1963. Dr. Dyer’s legacy will always be remembered as an immense contribution toward the progress of the African American community in Macon.
