FROM THE DIRECTOR
Whenever I have relocated to a new city or neighborhood, one of the first things I did was visit the public library and get a local library card. For me, having a library card connects me to the community while providing a sense of belonging and investment in where I live.

For over 30 years, the American Library Association has designated September as Library Card Sign-Up Month. As you likely know from experience, a library card is a gateway to accessing information in a variety of formats and settings, including books, online resources, and internet connectivity. And now it’s easier than ever to get a library card at Shorewood Public Library. You can register (or renew, if your card is expired) for a library card online or in-person.

I encourage you to share your love of your library card with someone in September. Perhaps you’ll take a selfie with your card for a social media shout out using the hashtags #LibraryCardSignUpMonth and #ShorewoodPublicLibrary. Better still, encourage a neighbor, relative, or coworker to get a library card of their own. I feel certain it will help them “Learn, Connect and Explore,” our Shorewood Public Library mission.

NEW AT THE LIBRARY: RADON DETECTORS
Did you know that radon, a naturally-occurring radioactive gas, is common in Wisconsin and can leak into your home? It's also the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.

You can easily test the concentration of radon in your home by checking out a digital radon detector from the library. Thanks to a generous donation by a Shorewood resident and library patron, we now offer two meters for a three-week loan period to any library card holder.

You can find more information on radon in Wisconsin on the Department of Health Services' website.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING 101: REGGIE JACKSON RETURNS ON SEPTEMBER 14TH
Reggie Jackson returns at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, September 14th via Zoom for Affordable Housing 101: What You Need to Know About Affordable Housing - Opportunities and Challenges. In this presentation, Reggie will explore the topic of affordable housing’s history, the opportunities presented by creating affordable housing, and the challenges of making that happen. Reggie will provide common language to help attendees have productive conversations about the topic, and examples from around the country as well as locally will give background on the difficulties communities face when trying to provide affordable housing.

Registration is required for this event, and you can register online HERE.

This program is co-sponsored by the Shorewood Senior Resource Center.
SUMMER CELEBRATION THANK YOU
We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy the return of our annual Summer Celebration in August! We hope that you had a fantastic time playing games, listening to Frogwater, enjoying some custard, and gathering together with the community. We also want to thank all of our amazing volunteers and staff for helping this event run smoothly. If you have not already shared your Summer Celebration photographs with us, we encourage you to do so by tagging us on social media, sending them via direct message on Facebook or Instagram, or by emailing them to us!
CONSTRUCTION IMPACT ON PARKING ACCESS
Construction work on Frederick Avenue continues to impact access to parking around Village Center, including our parking lot. As you plan your library visit, we encourage you to give yourself a few extra minutes to navigate around the construction to locate a parking spot.
NEW: HEPA FILTRATION UNITS IN THE LIBRARY
This August, the library purchased several stand-alone HEPA filtration units to help slow/stop the spread of COVID-19. You will see the HEPA filtration units at several points around the library, including one in each study room. These filtration units supplement our other mitigation strategies which include physical distancing, providing hand sanitizer throughout the library, and asking all individuals over the age of two to wear a mask. You can read more about the library's mitigation efforts in our COVID-19 Policy HERE.
TEEN ADVISORY BOARD
The library is seeking applications for our Teen Advisory Board (TAB). TAB members earn volunteer/community service hours, design and lead library programs, advise on library projects, and learn important job skills. Applicants must be in 7th-12th grade and able to complete at least six hours of volunteer work per semester. Applications for the first semester of the school year are due on Friday, September 17th, and a mandatory orientation will be held on Tuesday, September 21st from 4:00-5:00 PM via Zoom. Pick up a paper application at the library, or apply online HERE. Email Young Adult Librarian Lisa with any questions at lisa.quintero@mcfls.org.
LIBRARY RENOVATION UPDATE
In 2022, Shorewood's Village Center - the building housing Shorewood Public Library - celebrates 20 years. This presents an opportunity to reimagine the library's spaces completely. In 2020, the library contracted with HGA to create a Renovation Master Plan. With this plan in hand, the library can now seek support from the Village of Shorewood Board of Trustees to conduct the renovation in 2022-2023. We invite you to attend the Village Board meeting on Monday, September 20 at 7:30 PM to hear our presentation and learn more about the planned renovation.

WHAT WE'RE READING

I love Anne of Green Gables, so reading Starler’s modern retelling of Anne’s graduate school years in New York was a real treat! Starler’s novel follows Anne to New York City, where she lives with her fierce childhood best friend Diana Barry. When her grade school rival Gilbert Blythe transfers into her graduate program after years away in California, old feelings of competition turn into something much friendlier - and steamier - than Anne expected. Readers will enjoy familiar scenes mixed with new characters and modern plotlines as they follow Anne and Gilbert’s blossoming romance in this perfect back-to-school read!

Becky Chambers is known as a master of crafting grounded, human stories- just set in space about aliens. Unlike previous books in her Wayfarers series, The Galaxy, and the Ground Within is the first to feature zero human characters. In this heartfelt tale, four strangers (all of different alien species) are stuck together at the intergalactic equivalent of a truck stop when technical difficulties ground all traffic to and from the planet Gora. Chambers explores both the whimsical curiosities of alien life alongside universal themes of diversity, identity, and what defines "home" with her (literally) out-of-this world writing.

Pick up this beautifully written atypical romance novel for a fresh start to fall! Whitman Tagore's star is rising fast, but a few missteps threaten to force her out of Hollywood's favor. Enter PR specialist Marie who snags wealthy boy-toy Leo Milanowski to act as Win's beau. Leo and Win's on-again off-again romance is the stuff of tabloid dreams, but is there more to it than that?
This debut novel by wife team Clements and Datta will have you enjoying the view!

INFORMATION YOU CAN TRUST
With so many sources for information, it can be hard to sort out fact from fiction and to determine who to trust.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services webpage has up-to-date information about the COVID-19 pandemic including data about the vaccination rollout, who is eligible, and where to get a vaccine.
