Thursday, November 3, 2022 - The Higher Brain
|
|
Dear Friends in Christ,
For my continuing education this year, I have begun a class through UW-Madison's Pyle Center called "Managing your Brain for Managers: the Neuroscience of Leading Self and Others."
It's been fascinating so far. Lots of hard evidence about how often we instinctively act out of our "lower brain," the part that has helped us defend ourselves and pass on our genes for millions of years, but which so quicky moves to fear, anxiety, rage...etc. In contrast, the "higher brain" helps us experience human connection and divine transcendence, fosters creativity and joy. And the most amazing thing is that our brains never stop growing and re-forming so that we truly do have quite a bit of control over which part of the brain we nourish. Lots of stuff out there about this for those who are interested.
St. Irenaeus of Lyons said around 180 A.D., "The glory of God is a human being fully alive." We are now filling in some of the neuro-biological pathways to that flourishing.
With Hope and Peace,
Seth+
P.S. I loved this great little video about how easy it is for our brain to get into a perceptual rut and how one can get out of it. It's called " The Backwards Bicycle."
P.P.S. Fr. Oswald is doing his continuing education through a trip to the Holy Lands! Please keep him in your prayers as he travels.

Stewardship 2023:
Living Stones
Thank you for your faithful generosity!
By now we hope you have received the stewardship mailing which includes the pledge card for 2023. If we missed you, please feel free to reach out to the office. For those who prefer to fill out the card electronically, simply go here.
Last Sunday, parishioner Penny Cruse spoke about what Christ Church has meant to her. See it here.
We are deeply grateful that you would prayerfully consider a pledge to the parish for 2023. We are hoping to have all pledges collected by November 13. Your generosity helps create a spiritual home where all are welcome.
2023 Stewardship Team
Beth Durant (Chair), Steve Bruemmer, Loni Hagerup, Joan King, Ben Rikkers, Julie Thauer, The Rev. Seth Dietrich

Stewardship FAQs
1. What is a pledge?
A pledge is a sacred commitment to give a certain portion of household income to the parish for the following calendar year. In many ways, it is a spiritual practice. On a practical level, it helps us form the parish budget for next year.
2. What do people typically give?
At Christ Church, pledges range from $150 to $23,500. Last year, 186 households pledged with an average pledge of $3,400. Everyone is in a very different financial position, and every pledge is deeply appreciated.
3. What is the concept of "tithing?"
Like many Christian traditions, the Episcopal Church encourages "the biblical standard of the tithe for financial stewardship" (Canon III 6.2.iii). Tithing 10% of income comes from the practice of the ancient Israelites bringing the first 10% of their harvest to the Temple. While some of us are there; many of us are still on the journey to get there.
4. Who knows about my pledge?
Pledging amounts are kept highly confidential. Only the financial administrator, Patrice Hansen, and Fr. Seth has access.
5. What if I have questions about parish finances?
We are more than happy to provide a copy of the parish budget as well as answer any questions. Contact the parish wardens, Ben Rikkers or Penny Cruse for more information.

Kevin Chandler
Director of Transmission Development for Invenergy
The electricity grid in the U.S. is rapidly changing, with renewable energy taking an ever larger share of electricity generation. This talk will focus on how and why this change is happening, whether it’s occurring fast enough, and what new technologies to expect in the future.
Kevin Chandler is a new Christ Church parishioner. His work is focused on accelerating the shift to clean energy. He is currently Director of Transmission Development for Invenergy, the country’s largest private developer of renewable energy. Previously he was Director of Government Affairs for Apex Clean Energy. He started his career working on environmental advocacy campaigns.

Families!
Our nursery is staffed and open for all children, birth through 3 years old starting on September 11, from 9:15-10:45AM.
Sunday School meets for grades Pre3/4k-5th grade from 9:15AM until returning to worship during the passing of the peace. Calendar, locations, and classes will be shared in more detail next week. If you would like to volunteer to teach, please see the article below and contact Aaron Shoppa.
A Note on Preschool 3 year olds: We recognize that children grow at different stages and not all children are at the same areas of development at a specific age. If you think your child is ready to join us in Sunday School, then please do so. If not, the nursery is always available for children, birth through 3 years old. Feel free to make the best choice for your child, and if that varies from week to week or even at the mid-year point, that is totally okay!
Sunday School meets again this week, starting in the classrooms at 9:15AM and going until about 10:05AM when children enter worship to rejoin their families. Have you signed up to help teach or assist? We have NO ONE signed up to help on October 30. If we cannot find willing volunteers, we will have to cancel Sunday School for that morning.
Holy Moly: Naomi and Ruth
Connect - The Promise: Jacob and Esau

Family Liturgy - THIS SUNDAY!
This is also All Saints Day and a Baptism Sunday. As you we prepare for our time together, parents/caregivers of children, please be ready to think of saints (whether alive or dead) who have helped you to grow in your faith. We will return to worship in time for any baptisms that are happening that day.

Acolyte Sign-up - torchbearers and crucifers at the 9:30 service
Now is the time to sign up to be an acolyte this Fall. Young people are encouraged to help lead worship through the roles of torchbearer (3rd-5th grade) and crucifer (6th-12th grade).
No experience necessary as training can be available the day your child is signed up for or through a session at an upcoming youth group gathering. When signed up, please be at the church no later than 9:15AM or 9:00AM if it is your child's first time.
Sign up by adding your child's name to THIS LIST from Jean Bieszk or by sending her an email. THANKS!

There is a Haiti Project newsletter dedicated to the Haiti Project, put together by the new Diocesaen liaison to the project: Caroline Senn. Take a look!
