Three million refugees flee Ukraine
The crisis in Ukraine has quickly unfolded as the fastest-growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.

Millions of Ukrainians are seeking refuge in bordering countries, with over 2 million in Poland alone. Others are flying to the Mexican border city of Tijuana to seek U.S. asylum.

Last month, President Biden announced that the United States is preparing to welcome 100,000 Ukrainian refugees, many of whom will most likely resettle in Sacramento – home to the nation’s highest concentration of Ukrainian immigrant populations.
An end to Title 42? Pandemic restriction has caused undue hardship for asylum seekers
In March 2020, the CDC issues what would become known as the "Title 42" order.

This pandemic restriction stopped migrants from claiming asylum at the border, even though US law guarantees the right to claim asylum.

Title 42 has drawn widespread criticism from advocates and public health officials alike.
Title 42 has resulted in approximately 1.7 million expulsions of asylum seekers back to harm, disproportionately impacting Black migrants.

Under the Biden administration, nearly 10,000 documented incidents of kidnapping, torture, rape, and other violent attacks against vulnerable migrants – who are blocked from claiming asylum because of Title 42 – have been reported.

Last month, the CDC announced plans to terminate Title 42 by May 23, 2022. Opening Doors applauds any and all efforts to support asylum seekers at the border – and elsewhere. We call upon the Biden administration to restore a welcoming asylum system that protects people from detention and being returned to dangerous situations, and gives equal opportunity to all people fleeing violence and persecution – without discrimination.

Seeking asylum is a right under U.S. law.

Ultimately, asylum seekers and refugees want the same thing: to keep themselves and their families safe.
