Sister companies featured for their

workforce development initiatives

Sturgeon Bay manufacturing companies MARINE TRAVELIFT, EXACTECH and SHUTTLELIFT were featured for their innovative workforce participation practices at the Bay Area Winning with Wisconsin's Workforce event Sept. 13 at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Michelle Waldinger, director of human resources for the sister companies, presented the many initiatives that they've implemented during the past two years to attract, develop and retain top talent.

The event was attended by 150 business representatives, community leaders and workforce development professionals from the 11-county Bay Area.

Marine Travelift, ExacTech and Shuttlelift are located in the Sturgeon Bay Industrial Park and manufacture superior boat handling equipment, including mobile boat hoists, marine forklifts and hydraulic transporters. The companies have delivered more than 5,000 boat hoists throughout the world.

Marine Travelift's variable width boat hoist has been nominated for the 8th annual Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin contest.

A popular vote round has started and will continue until Sept. 26 to determine the Top 16 products that will compete in a bracket-style tournament called Manufacturing Madness. During each of the rounds, the public is encouraged to vote once per day, per device. Ultimately, the 2023 Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin will be crowned at the Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce Business Day in Madison on Oct. 19.

Muse to feature music venue, apartments

Door County community members, local and state dignitaries and project stakeholders celebrated the groundbreaking for the MUSE development on Third Avenue and Jefferson Street in Sturgeon Bay Wednesday morning.

The nearly 14,000 square-foot facility will house a music school and performance center on the first floor and 11 affordable studio apartments on the second floor. Public restrooms, accessible from the outside of the building, will also be located on the first floor.

The developer is Shirley Weese Young, who has rehabbed several other downtown properties in the city the past few years, including the old Advocate newspaper building nearby on Third Avenue. Door County musicians Kaira Rouer and Dave Utzinger will serve as the Muse's executive director and artistic director, respectively.

The Muse is expected to be completed by June 2024.

Pictured in the groundbreaking photo above, from left to right, are: Utzinger, Rouer, Sturgeon Bay Mayor David Ward, Muse Board President Gary Ciepluch, building contractor Craig Cornell and Weese Young.
