SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEE CHAIR MATT DOLAN: “WHERE A CHILD GETS EDUCATED IS NOT AS IMPORTANT TO US AS—THE CHILD GETS EDUCATED”

Senator Dolan, during a recent panel discussion on Impact Ohio Akron-Canton Regional Virtual Conference, signaled that the Cupp/Patterson Fair Funding plan is too expensive and that a big difference between the House and Senate is the involvement of private and charter schools. Dolan stated that there will be a lot more discussion on school choice.

It is alarming that lawmakers seem to be oblivious to their constitutional responsibility for education as required by Article VI section 2: “The General Assembly shall make such provisions, by taxation, or otherwise, as…will secure a thorough and efficient system of common schools throughout the state; but, no religious or other sect, or sects, shall ever have any exclusive right to, or control of, any part of the school funds of this state.”

The current leadership of the Ohio Senate will seek to expand school choice until the common school system is devastated. Their view is the Cupp/Patterson Plan is too expensive, but charters and vouchers must be expanded.

The EdChoice Voucher litigation provides a way to stop the expanded financial encroachment on school districts.
