The final rule for 2023 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) was released this week. It will have the biggest impact on your ACO’s financial opportunities and downside risk exposure since the introduction of Pathways to Success. With the new rules, some ACOs could get a substantial boost to their shared savings if they renew their agreement period early for PY 2024. While other ACOs might actually see a negative impact that could drive their future track, participant and attribution selections.
Interoperability of sex/gender EHR elements could help support research to improve population health, according to a study published in JAMIA. Researchers examined recommendations from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) report “Measuring Sex, Gender Identity, and Sexual Orientation” and the Health Level 7 (HL7) Gender Harmony Project (GHP) product brief “Gender Harmony—Modeling Sex and Gender Representation, Release 1.” “Both the HL7 GHP and the NASEM report agree on several fundamental principles: sex and gender are complex, multidimensional constructs that are essential for improving health at both the individual and population levels,” the researchers wrote.
Social determinants of health (SDoH)—the conditions in which people live and the systems that shape those conditions—are increasingly receiving attention. The COVID-19 pandemic, by exacerbating inequities and highlighting the prevalence of unmet basic needs has accelerated efforts to address SDoH. State Medicaid agencies, payers, providers, vendors, community-based organizations (CBOs), and other stakeholders have taken up the torch and are laying the foundations for long-term SDoH programs (see sidebar “What are social determinants of health?”). Despite the momentum, however, many stakeholders across the ecosystem are still in the early stages of addressing patients’ SDoH sustainably and at scale
CareJourney and Koda Health today announced new findings on the adoption rate of Advance Care Planning (ACP)1, using Medicare claims and enrollment data from 2015 to 2019.2 Overall, adoption rates of ACP are sluggish, with significant disparities across race and dual-status between Medicare Advantage (MA) and Fee-for-Service (FFS) beneficiaries.
