SBCCD Prepares for Safe Reopening, Fall 2021
By now, you may be aware that California has surpassed a major milestone in the fight against COVID - administering more than 20 million vaccine doses, including 4 million in the state's hardest-hit communities, helping hospitalizations to steadily decline. With these public health improvements, California aims to fully reopen on June 15, while continuing to require masking and encouraging everyone to get vaccinated.
As we look ahead, there is good news to report about our Fall 2021 plans. Given the decline in cases and vaccine eligibility for anyone 16 years or older, we are planning a safe return to campus for the Fall semester with in-person classes. Read more >>

Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month

May was chosen as Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese migrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. Most of the workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.

AAPIs have a long and rich heritage of involvement in the history of the United States. If you didn't know this, consider taking the time, particularly this month of May to inquire and ask about how AAPIs have played a role in shaping America. Make new friends and build community by participating in the 2021 Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month Celebration hosted by Crafton Hills College:

California Virtual Campus (CVC)
The California Virtual Campus (CVC) is a digital resource that provides easy access for students to enroll in online courses across all
115 brick-and-mortar California Community Colleges (please note, this tool excludes the system's fully online college, Calbright), including a comprehensive catalog of online programs and courses to help students achieve their educational goals. CVC helps students to improve their skills, train for new careers, and transfer to a four-year university.

The CVC Exchange is an innovative, student-centered tool that allows students currently enrolled in a California Community College to instantly enroll in online courses offered at eligible colleges without filling out a separate application. The CVC Exchange benefits students by allowing them to enroll in transfer courses not currently available at their Home College to complete their general education requirements, including those looking to transfer to a four-year university-all without needing to fill out a separate application for each college.

CalWORKs Team Forges Community Partnerships to Assist Students
Students in the California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) program at SBVC have received additional support during the pandemic.

Thanks to the partnerships facilitated over the years between SBVC and its local community partners, CalWORKs students were recently gifted 70 new laptops by the Great Harvest Community Center. "This type of donation is a tremendous weight off of their shoulders, knowing that they're going to have their own technology," said Shalita Tillman, CalWORKs & Workforce Development Manager. "I think the feeling of the ownership that they get from receiving these laptops is something that is going to elevate their education, and it was just phenomenal. You could just see the appreciation in the students' faces. This donation represents empowerment to our students." Additionally, the CalWORKs students received Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including face masks, gloves and hand sanitizer from the San Bernardino branch of the Census Bureau. Furthermore, students were gifted gas cards from the CalWORKs program to assist with various transportation costs.

California's massive UC and Cal State systems plan to require COVID-19 vaccinations this fall

The California State University and the University of California today announced that they intend to require faculty, staff and students to be immunized against the virus that causes COVID-19 if they access campus facilities.

The proposed requirement will be conditioned upon full approval and adequate availability of one or more vaccines by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This requirement would become effective at the beginning of the Fall 2021 term, or upon full FDA approval of the vaccine, whichever occurs later. Read more >>

Students Want Online Learning Options Post-Pandemic

When colleges switched to emergency remote instruction last year, some online learning advocates feared the hasty transition would leave students with a negative impression of online learning.

Despite the challenges and shortcomings of this emergency transition to remote instruction, a majority of students want the option to keep studying online, according to new survey results. The survey includes responses from 772 teaching faculty, 514 academic administrators and 1,413 students who were registered at a U.S. higher education institution for both the fall 2020 and spring 2021 semesters.

San Bernardino Valley College maintains a culture of continuous improvement and a commitment to provide high-quality education, innovative instruction, and services to a diverse community of learners. Its mission is to prepare students for transfer to four-year universities, to enter the workforce by earning applied degrees and certificates, to foster economic growth and global competitiveness through workforce development, and to improve the quality of life in the Inland Empire and beyond.
