PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAM REGISTRATION
To help students explore their areas of interest, many colleges are offering winter or summer pre-college programs. These programs are a great way to get
exposed to subjects that are not available in high school: technology, art, science, medicine, architecture, sports management, business, engineering, fashion, and much more. If you are curious about a subject, it's likely there is a pre-college program out there for you. Taking extra-curricular classes like these is also a good way to demonstrate your interests to the colleges you may be applying to in the future. Registration for the winter (January) programs is going on now. Registration for the summer programs begins now and continues for a few months. Many colleges have not posted their 2022 offerings yet, so keep looking. Registration for winter and summer pre-college programs is happening now. Two directories of pre-college programs can be found here and here.

PARENT EDUCATION
HOW GRATITUDE AND GIVING REWIRE YOUR BRAIN
“Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” -Proverb

Often the holiday season can bring high expectations for a cozy and festive time of the year. However, for many this time brings feelings of anxiety or being overwhelmed by the never-ending “to do” list. Certainly, parents and guardians often have more to do with year-end tasks and holiday gatherings and shopping. Our children certainly feel our stresses and they have their own as they approach final exams and papers and maybe some of their own expectations of what this season means to them. New research (and common sense) suggests that one aspect of the Thanksgiving and the holiday season can actually lift the spirits and rewire our brains–-practicing gratitude and giving.

If you have parent education topic ideas or shareable resources, please reach out to Parent Education Chairs Alicia Griffith or Chris Flitter. For information about Parent Education Opportunities, visit the parent education page on the CPC website.

THINGS TO DO--SENIORS
  • UPDATE NAVIANCE As your college application decisions roll in, be sure to update Naviance with the decisions. Go to "Colleges I'm applying" and update decisions: Accepted, Denied, Waitlisted.
  • THANK YOU NOTES If a teacher wrote a Letter of Recommendation for you, be sure to reciprocate and write a thank you note. These teachers spent many hours thoughtfully constructing these letters, so be certain your thank you note is equally thoughtful. Small gifts are also appreciated.
  • COMPLETE THE SENIOR SURVEY We need some info from you. From our data, we have a sense of what grades and test scores it takes to get accepted to our colleges. The piece of the puzzle that is missing is which major a student applied to. Help us out by filling out a survey to tell us just that. Complete the Senior survey here.
  • PAY ATTENTION! Create and check your college portals and emails regularly. Be sure to respond to any correspondence immediately.
  • NOW THAT APPS ARE DONE Be sure to follow the steps listed here to keep on top of your college applications, including what to do if you were deferred or waitlisted.
  • HOW TO ACE YOUR COLLEGE INTERVIEW Bentley University wrote an article with tips for acing your optional or required college interview. Interviewers want students who apply with purpose, so make sure you know your stuff. The article includes some tips on how to prepare so you can take advantage of this valuable time with a counselor, current student, or alumni interviewer. Read the article here.
  • DO NOT GET SENIORITIS! Senior grades count. Many colleges request mid-year (first semester) transcripts. Your acceptances are on the condition that you maintain the GPA with which you were accepted.

Always check the Class of ‘22 Parent Page for up to date information on events throughout the year.

JUNIOR CLASS NEWS
THINGS TO DO-- JUNIORS
  • STAY ENGAGED Stay engaged in your activities and academics. Your academic transcript is very important, focus on maintaining good study habits.
  • KNOW YOUR TEACHERS Get to know at least one of your teachers because you may need a letter of recommendation from them when applying to college next year.
  • BE INVOLVED Be involved in extra-curricular activities such as a club, volunteering or a job. Those activities give you experience, broaden your perspective and show interests when applying to college. UC's take 20 activities and Common Application allows 10 activities. Sports is only one activity.
  • ACT/SAT TESTING Spring of Junior year is when many students choose to take standardized tests if planning on applying to four-year colleges. Although not all four-year colleges require tests anymore, we highly recommend taking either the SAT or ACT to increase your school options. These tests can also be taken in the fall of Senior year.
  • JUNIOR CHECKLIST Become familiar with the steps that lie ahead to apply to college next year. See the Junior checklist here.

JUNIOR PROM COMMITTEE We are looking for a parent committee to help plan the Class of 2023's Junior Prom which will be held on April 23, 2022. Jobs include planning dessert bar, day-of activities, logistics, and decorations. If you're interested in helping, please contact Laura Ceridono. Our first meeting will be over zoom today, Tuesday, January 4th from 7-8pm.
