Is more better? Amounts and frequency of milk replacer fed to calves under heat stress
A new study in the Journal of Dairy Science® examines optimal feeding strategies for dairy calves raised in warm environments – Calves raised during the heat of summer have reduced growth, increased disease incidence, and higher mortality rates compared with those raised in temperate environments or neutral thermal conditions. The reduced average daily weight gain observed in the summer can be partially attributed to heat stress. In a new report published ahead of the February 2022 issue of the Journal of Dairy Science®, scientists from the University of Georgia (Athens, GA, USA) investigated the effects of rate and frequency of milk replacer feeding on performance, emptying of the abomasum (one of the bovine forestomachs), and nutrient digestibility among young calves during summer and winter in the warm environment of the southeastern United States.

Dairy calves are social animals
A new study in JDS Communications® explores young calves’ motivation to seek companionship – Most dairy calves are housed individually in the first weeks and sometimes months of their lives, a practice that has come under scrutiny for its effects on animal behavior, welfare, and health. Despite growing scientific and public support for social housing, approximately 75% and 60% of preweaning dairy calves in the United States and Europe, respectively, are still housed individually.

It’s time to submit your abstract for the
2022 ADSA Annual meeting!
The abstract submission site for the 2022 ADSA Annual Meeting is open! You can now submit your abstract. Submission instructions, quality standards, answers to frequently asked questions, and student competition guidelines are available on the page. There is no abstract submission fee to submit an abstract to the ADSA Annual Meeting.
ADSA 2022 will be an in-person meeting!
Again in 2022: Platform Sessions. In a platform session, an invited speaker leads off a themed or topical oral session with a 30- or 45-minute talk, which is then followed by submitted abstract talks. This oral session type can result in higher levels of engagement of oral session submitters and presenters, while disseminating the most current research. Platform sessions provide a third oral session option, somewhere between a symposium and a general oral session. When submitting your abstract(s), be sure to look for platform sessions that may incorporate your research.
REMEMBER - The deadline for abstract submission is February 17, 2022, at 11:59 p.m. (CST).
The 2022 ADSA Annual Meeting website will be updated frequently with the latest meeting information, so bookmark the site and visit often. Housing will open soon, and meeting registration will be available in early February 2022. (https://www.adsa.org/Meetings/2022-Annual-Meeting
The 2022 ADSA Annual Meeting scientific program will feature 1,200 oral and poster presentations from around the globe. Make sure yours is included, as 2,000 scientists from 50 countries meet virtually and in-person in vibrant Kansas City, Missouri. Benefit from symposia, workshops, and preconference events presented by the world’s leading animal and dairy scientists. Topics will include dairy food science, dairy production, animal health and well-being, animal and human nutrition, food safety, and production and management. Check out the full list and make plans to attend. As always, the success of the ADSA Annual Meeting begins with the quality of the science presented—we look forward to your contributions to this global gathering of animal and dairy scientists.

Be a Part of the Discussion: Join us for the 42nd Discover Conference - Managing Genetic Diversity for Future Dairy and Livestock Breeding
The 42nd Discover Conference- Managing Genetic Diversity for Future Dairy and Livestock Breeding will include virtual options. It will be held April 19-21, 2022 at Northern Illinois University Naperville Conference Center Hosted by the American Dairy Science Association®.
Conference Objective
Conference Objective: Genetic diversity drives our ability to increase profitability through selection, shift selection objectives to meet new market demands, and adapt to new environments. For the past 50 years combined breeding entities have successfully made U.S. genetics globally preeminent -- increasing food security and providing marketing opportunities for U.S. breeders. With a range of new selection tools and methods to employ this is an opportune time to pause, reflect and plan how genetic diversity and inbreeding might be managed in such a way that further advances U.S. genetics for the greater good. Led by the USDA National Animal Germplasm Program, this Discover Conference is one part of a comprehensive approach to address the issue of genetic diversity. The goal of these activities is to promote a shift in how breeding, genetic improvement and genetic diversity are viewed and used in an intensive agricultural sector found in countries like the United States. A poster session will also be offered to allow participants to share and discuss research findings.
Conference Topics
Who should attend: Various stakeholders in the breeding industry including breed associations, companies selling dairy and livestock genetics, companies developing and selling genomic technology, university scientists, and government agencies are all encouraged to participate. We want to extend a special invitation to dairy producers and breeders to attend this conference to lend their unique insights to the discussion. Graduate students and early career professionals are especially encouraged to attend.
The Early Registration Deadline is March 18, 2022. Registration fees increase by $100 after March 18. Click here for additional information.
