Lauren-Thompson-RN-Website image

I chose South Central because the people I work with make bad days better.

Lauren Thompson, RN, has been a member of the South Central Regional Medical Center family for four years. Lauren, who is a Jones County native, works on the Telemetry floor at SCRMC. She is a graduate of Jones College Nursing Program. Lauren started her journey at SCRMC in the laboratory and transferred to telemetry unit while in nursing school. After completion of nursing school and receiving her licensure, she transitioned from a nurse tech to registered nurse in February of 2023.

“I became a nurse because I have always loved to help people,” says Lauren. “Being able to see a person recover after being extremely sick means a lot to me. Also knowing that I played a role in their improvement is a really great feeling. I find joy in my role because I am able to talk to patients, form relationships, and provide them resources to improve their quality of life.

As a telemetry nurse, Lauren provides treatment to patients experiencing chest pain, post cardiac arrest, heart failure, and other health issues. “I absolutely love what I do and the team I work with,” says Lauren. “I chose South Central because the people I work with make the bad days better. Being a caregiver can be difficult; however, we have a great staff, from physicians to techs, that offer excellent care.”

Our focus at South Central is to invest in our employees. Lauren states, “When I made the decision to start nursing school, South Central offered tuition assistance. I feel like this really showed the health system’s commitment to me. The staff helped me through nursing school and prepared me for the journey to become a nurse. After I completed school and passed my exams, I joined South Central as a Registered Nurse.”

At SCRMC, our goal is for employees to choose us. Our health system offers extensive benefits and competitive pay rates. By choosing South Central, you become a part of our healthcare family. To view our open positions at South Central, click here.

Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Center in Laurel Offers Sclerotherapy

to Reduce Spider Veins

Is it time to address those unsightly spider veins you have been living with? What do you know about spider veins, their treatment and how they differ from varicose veins? Read on to learn more:

  • Varicose veins and spider veins aren’t the same thing. Spider veins are small, thin blood vessels seen just under the skin. Varicose veins are thick, stretched-out veins where blood has pooled.
  • They are both genetic. You can inherit the tendencies for spider and varicose veins from either or both sides of the family; they may even skip a generation.
  • They’re not merely a cosmetic problem. The most common misconception about varicose veins is that people only get them treated because they are unsightly. Varicose veins are usually not a health issue, but they shouldn’t be ignored. They cause fatigue of the legs, swelling and discomfort. They can also be a warning of deep vein thrombosis, blood clots and poor circulation. The painful symptoms can be eased with compression stockings or panty hose.
  • Crossing your legs and wearing high heels do not cause varicose veins. The pooling of blood is more commonly caused by prolonged standing and/or sitting. Other causes may be pregnancy, obesity, smoking, lack of exercise and hormonal birth control.
  • Men have them, too, but men are less likely to seek treatment.
  • Exercise is the best way to prevent spider and varicose veins. The more active and healthy you are the better – walking is one of the best preventative measures.
  • Other than medical, professional treatment, there’s no proven way to reduce the appearance of spider veins. Some patients use makeup to cover them.

The Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Center offers sclerotherapy as treatment for spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a solution into the veins which causes them to gradually disappear. It is a relatively painless procedure which requires minimal recovery time. For most patients, desired results are achieved in two to four treatment sessions.

If you would like to know more about spider veins and sclerotherapy, call to schedule a consultation appointment, today: 601-425-7522.

South Central Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center

Recognized with Two National Awards.

2022-Center-of-Distinction-and-Clinical-Excellence-Award image

The team at South Central Wound Care celebrated their achievement for excellent patient outcomes in 2022. The facility was awarded the Robert A. Warriner III, M.D., Center of Excellence Award and the Healogics Center of Distinction Award. These awards represent 95% patient satisfaction rates for the year of 2022, 89% wound adjusted comprehensive healing rates and 10% outlier rates (average is 16%). South Central Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine is recognized as being in the top 10% of centers with the highest wound comprehensive healing rates.

Program Director of South Central Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, Deborah Myrick, stated, “The mission of our facility is to be wound healing experts; driving wound science, healing and prevention forward to help heal wounds and change lives. We are committed to advancing wound healing with our patients and in our community. Achieving exceptional outcomes and receiving two awards for 2022 is an honor and truly shows the dedication of our staff.”

South Central Wound Care is a member of the Healogics network of nearly 800 Centers, with access to benchmarking data and proven experience treating approximately 2.5 million chronic wounds. South Central Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center offers highly specialized wound care to patients suffering from diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers, infections and other chronic wounds which have not healed in a reasonable amount of time. Some of the leading-edge treatments offered at the Wound Care Center include negative pressure wound therapy, debridement, application of cellular-based tissue to the wound, offloading or total contact casts and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Tiffany Keith, PA, at South Central Wound Care, stated, “We see patients living with non-healing wounds for a prolonged amount of time due to the lack of awareness of advanced wound care options. We work to educate community physicians about which of their patients can benefit from advanced wound care, and then provide coordinated care to heal that patient’s wounds.”

Dr. Michael Weber serves as the Medical Director for the program. He stated, “The team at South Central Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine is exceptional. The facility has earned consecutive awards for their excellent healing rates and patient satisfaction. I am proud of the excellent care the group provides to our community.”

For more information about South Central Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center, please call 601-426-4739. The Wound Care Center is located at 1220 Jefferson Street in Laurel on the ground floor of South Central Regional Medical Center.

Lyndi Pryor, LPN II, has been a member of the South Central Regional Medical Center family for three years. Lyndi, who is a Jones County native, works on the Medical-Surgical floor at SCRMC.

“I chose South Central because it’s home,” said Lyndi. “I’m from Laurel and I love to be able to take care of people in our community. When patients come to the hospital, they are at their most vulnerable state. I am able to learn about their history and their background. My goal is to take that information and help teach the patient about their disease process and help implement their plan of care.”
