211 provides help for Cybercrime victims
United Way of North Carolina’s NC 211 has launched the North Carolina Cybercrime Support Initiative through a Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Victim Assistance Grant that was awarded by The North Carolina Governor’s Crime Commission. This service is a collaboration between United Way of North Carolina (UWNC) and the Cybercrime Support Network (CSN). With the support from local United Way organizations, like the Catawba County United Way, NC 211 is here 365 days a year to help North Carolinians facing individual and family crises. In 2019, 1,210 breaches were reported to the North Carolina Department of Justice – the most reported in a year since the reporting requirement began in 2005. Around 1.08 million North Carolinians were estimated to have been impacted by these data breaches. Further, in 2019, more than 467,000 complaints from individuals and small businesses in North Carolina were filed with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center for monetary losses of more than $3.5 billion.
State provides rides to COVID vaccines
The NC Department of Transportation and the NC Department of Health and Human Services recently announced that approximately $2.5 million in Coronavirus Relief Funding is being distributed to local transit agencies across the state - including Catawba County - to help pay for rides for individuals who need transportation assistance to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
Each local transit agency will receive a set amount of funding, and the initiative will continue until funds are exhausted for that agency. The funds can be used to offset operating costs associated with transit rides to and from vaccination sites for people who are receiving or assisting someone in receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

Teen Christmas thanks sponsors of library resource bags
The Catawba County United Way Teen Christmas program thanks the three agencies who worked together to build a special gift for 398 needy teenagers during the annual Christmas Bureau in December.
The Catawba County Library and the Hickory Public Library Systems provided information regarding library resources available for teens who are currently preforming most of their schoolwork at home. In addition to this, the Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry supplied each student with a flash drive to help with online work.
A gift item of jewelry was also stapled to bags given to females. The jewelry was handmade by Teen Christmas supporter Lynne Sparks who, unfortunately, passed away last month. Teen Christmas believes this unified endeavor will be an academic blessing to teens of Catawba County who lack valuable learning resources.

@Walmart is supporting your local United Way by giving shoppers the opportunity to round-up their purchases to the nearest $ and donate the change. Round-up is available on WalMart.com and the Walmart app through Jan. 29.

Catawba County Public Health, Catawba Valley Health System (CVHS) and Frye Regional Medical Center (FRMC) are working together to schedule appointments for those eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through a new website, www.CatawbaVaccine.org.
Through the site, the newest appointment scheduling option being offered, those 65 years of age and older may request COVID-19 vaccination appointments and complete the state-required pre-registration process online.
