Summer camp 2023: notes from the field

  • Campers need the GCC experience more than ever. From the instant friendships to the positive role models, and from the all-day physicality to the renewing time away from it all--our kids need this place. Most of all, they need to see for themselves that they are capable of more than they thought.
  • Continuous Glucose Monitors are amazing! Setting everything up to follow several dozen campers is a feat, to be sure, but when it works, we love it.
  • It's harder to lock down the internet than we thought. Campers, especially high schoolers and middle schoolers, are good at getting around our internet controls. But most campers told us they love this break from their phones, so we're not giving up!
  • Parents need a win. It's been a long few years, and our relationships have gotten tighter and in some cases more strained. Seeing your child thrive and succeed at camp, which can be scary at first (sometimes more for the parent), is a big win.
  • Non-COVID viruses are making a comeback! Camp is a place where people get close, in friendships and in person. We love it, but so do viruses. Our deepest apologies to campers whose sessions were canceled this year. We'll make it up to you next year!

Hope-Mongering parent support sessions are back!

This month:

Ask a Young Adult with T1D Anything

September 21 @ 7pm on Zoom

As a parent of a kiddo with T1D, sometimes it's hard to know the right thing to do. When should we expect our child to take on more responsibility for their T1D management? How can we be more helpful in the right way (and maybe less in a nagging way)? Of course, the answers are different for everyone, but it sure would be nice to ask a future version of your kid what they would have wanted, right?

Well, we've recruited a group of diverse young adults to represent your kiddo this month. Want to ask them what their parents did they absolutely hated? Go ahead. Ask them anything.

About Hope-Mongering:

Each month we recruit an array of key voices to host a series of conversations: parents, young adults who grew up with T1D, health coaches, educators, dietitians, T1D doctors and nurses, and of course the GCC summer camp crew. It's a magic formula for conversation on raising a young person with T1D. We'd love for you to join us and add your voice, or just sit back and listen. Feel free to bring topics or questions.
