Zarahana N. Kargbo (a.k.a. Zara), a High School Visual Artists attending Oakland School for the Arts, (OSA). Zara has produced many works of art using acrylic paints, charcoal, ink, pencil, and mixed mediums. At a very early age, Zara developed her artistic sensibility and learned hands on art techniques at various art camps. Being expressive and creative focusing on facial features and expressions of any subject, as a visual artist she has grown in her ability to bring details that highlight the natural essence of any piece. When painting, bright colors and texture helps bring energy to a painting with gestures and placement on canvas. With still life art, depth, shadows, and light is always the focus.

Zara is an award recipient of the 2023 Bay Area Creative Foundation in the Creative Youth category for her Zebra Hybrid Self Portrait painting which is included in their online 2023 Creative Gallery. An internship in the summer of 2022 with the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) lead to an extended opportunity to be a curator in Old Roots, New Leaves, a mixed-media exhibition curated by ten youth artists in MoAD’s first teen-led art exhibition. Her paintings can be seen in the museum through March 2024.

Zara’s recent appearance on KRON4 A-MAY-Zing kids in May 2023 gave her recognition as one of the Bay Area’s young up and coming Artist. Zara served as one of the curators in August 2023 “Emerging Youth of Time” Youth Art Exhibition in conjunction with OYAE (Oakland Youth Art Explosion) at Joyce Gordon Art Gallery

My name is Derick Davies, I am an 11th grade visual artist who attends Oakland School for the Arts. I also play varsity basketball at Mcclymonds high school. When I was in kindergarten I was heavily inspired by cartoons, books, and movies and that helped create my love to make my own art. After I enrolled at OSA in middle school my art skills vastly expanded for the better, as throughout my years to 11th grade I’ve been taught by some of the best visual artists teachers in the world. I was introduced to so many materials and techniques and my ability to make art has grown as a whole.

My best skill is making art with acrylic paint and as my knowledge of the art game has grown I've been able to grow my status by selling and making various commissions for people in the bay area. Joyce Gordon Gallery has also helped me get my art out there with their last two annual Oakland Youth Art Explosions which I was very thankful to have been a part of. I was given an opportunity to be on the believe radio bay area show with Barbara Howard on which I talked more about my life with art and my goals. As I continue on my art journey I look forward to growing my skills, making art for many people and becoming a known visual artist out of Oakland.
