A Message from our Past President
Dear Friends,

I thought you all might like to see the beautiful Sabika jewelry that I received as a thank you from the membership and the Board for serving as President this past year. Both the pearl bracelet and earring set and the crystal choker and bracelet are lovely and I will think of you all when I wear them.
Thank you so much for these gifts and the gifts of support and encouragement you gave me all year.
                                                                                                                       Susan

Ways and Means
Faye Cashwell - faye@cashwellhome.com

The club will approach Ways and Means differently this year. We will be working together as a team to make decisions on how to fundraise for the club.
Following is a list of the 2021 Ways and Means Committee
  • Suzanne Bentz, Capital Campaign
  • Kay Moe and Kathy Hanna, Flower Power
  • Cora Keenan and a Co-Chair, yet to be named, for the Virtual Run
  • Diane Norris, online auction from card party (with assist from Martha Blondheim, Tecie Thatcher, Kay Moe, and Lynn Wright).

A small committee will also be formed to look at the possibility of having our Home Tour later this year. There are several first steps we will need to accomplish. For example, can we find homes, secure insurance and have enough volunteers to work.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAMS
Arts and Culture
Jo Ann Kostkan jokostkan@gmail.com
Kim Reuning kimreuning@hotmail.com

March is Youth Art Month for GFWC GA. We are supporting youth by collecting glue sticks for youth art projects. In March, we will have 2 collections:

1.    125 glue sticks in celebration of our 125th anniversary for Dunwoody Nature Center
2.    Spring craft supplies for Adult Day of Dunwoody drop-off flower pot craft kit project

Please collect glue sticks to be donated to Dunwoody Nature Center’s youth camps for the GFWC Georgia March project celebrating our 125th anniversary. We also are collecting craft supplies to be used for our April Adult Day of Dunwoody flower pot decorating project. We need foam and regular spring stickers, mini flowers, feathers, markers, ribbon, silk flowers to place in each pot, or any other spring craft items that are not too small or sharp that can be used to decorate the 4-inch mini flower pots.

At 11 am on Tuesday, March 23, we will meet at the Spruill Gallery to view the Pomp and Circumstance exhibit that is on view through May 8. The address is 4681 Ashford Dunwoody Road. This exhibition provides a platform for 6 recent Georgia College graduates to express their work and become visible in the community due to their school closures during the 2020 school year. At this event, please bring your donations of glue sticks and spring craft supplies. If you cannot make this event and would like us to pick up your donations, please contact Jo Ann Kostkan or Kim Reuning. We will gladly pick them up for you!

At 10 am on Wednesday, April 7, we will meet at Kim Reuning’s home to assemble the drop-off spring craft bags for Adult Day of Dunwoody. We will have an assembly line to create 18 bags so that each participant at Adult Day can decorate a mini 4-inch tall flower pot. We will be social distancing and wearing masks. We will then take the craft bags to the facility. Adult Day is very excited about this upcoming event. They absolutely loved our drop-off pumpkin decorating craft kits in October. It really made a difference and was well received by the residents. Contact Kim for her address.

Upcoming Art Events:

Spruill Center Atrium has the “Doves of Hope” community sculpture exhibit hanging in the entry. The DWC doves we created in January are part of the art sculpture. Please stop by and view it!

Education and Libraries

This month we are celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday and Read Across America

Read Across America Poem

You're never too old, too wacky, too wild,
To pick up a book and read with a child.
You're never too busy, too cool, or too hot,
To pick up a book and share what you've got.

In schools and communities,
Let's gather around,
Let's pick up a book,
Let's pass it around.

There are kids all around you,
Kids who will need
Someone to hug, Someone to read.

To involve our community, we have placed Dr. Seuss books and over 50 activity sheets in the two little libraries that we are responsible for. If you would like a way to read with your grandchildren, please go to www.readeo.com a website that allows you to choose books and then read along with the child. There is a fee for this service.

We will be having a Zoom planning meeting for the Education and Libraries CSP on March 16 at 10am. Please join us as we plan for the coming year. One idea is to reinstate the book club. Do you have other ideas, we would love to hear them. An eblast will give you the information for the Zoom meeting.

Celebrate Women’s History Month

Join GFWC in recognizing women’s contributions to history, culture, and society from March 1-31. Women’s History Month, observed annually in March since 1987, is dedicated to reflecting on the often-overlooked contributions of women to U.S. history. From Abigail Adams to Rosa Parks, the timeline of women’s history milestones stretches back to the founding of the country.
The official recognition of Women’s History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. As part of this celebration, presentations were given at dozens of schools, hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest, and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa, California.
A few years later, the idea caught on within other communities, school districts, and organizations across the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8, as National Women’s History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration, and six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.
One of the many ways Women’s History Month has been celebrated since then involved a 50-year progress report issued by the White House in 2011, which detailed the status of women in the U.S. The report found that younger women were more likely than their male counterparts to hold a college degree and that the number of men and women in the labor force had nearly equalized.
Continue to follow News & Notes through March as GFWC celebrates Women’s History Month!
Leadership
Lynn Wright lynnelywright@aol.com

With each new installation of officers, DWC adjusts leadership roles. Regardless of the position, there are some general principles that define successful leaders.

·        Engage in honest, open communication.
·        Everyone’s time is precious; use it wisely.
·        Speak succinctly; don’t waste words.
·        Connect with your group members.
·        Keep a positive attitude.
·        Ask for feedback on your leadership.
·        Be open to new ideas.
·        Understand your own motivation.

It takes everyone working together to find success in the myriad activities of DWC. Leaders are only as strong as the members who support them. We are all part of our winning team!

I’ll Wear a Shamrock
Mary Carolyn Davies

St. Patrick’s Day is with us,
The day when all that’s seen
To right and left and everywhere
Is green, green, green!

And Irish tunes they whistle,
And Irish songs they sing,
Today each Irish lad walks out
As proud as any king.

I’ll wear a four-leaf shamrock
In my coat, the glad day through,
For my father and mother are Irish
And I am Irish too!

Mary Carolyn Davies was born in Sprague, Washington, in the late 1880s, though the dates of her birth and death are often contested. She grew up in Portland, Oregon, and was the author of several collections of poetry. She died some time around 1940. Academy of American Poets
