Listening to Each Other: The Gift of Being Quiet, Even When It’s Hard

Rachel Rogers

10:45 AM, Sunday, September 03, 2023

For many of us, no matter our age, it can be hard to be quiet and listen, especially when someone asks us to. We also know how frustrating it can be and how lonely we can feel when someone we want to hear us doesn’t seem to be able to pay attention. In this service for all ages, we will practice giving the gift of listening to each other, and explore what it can do for our hearts and our spirits to take the time to focus on what someone else has to offer us.

Potluck

Fellowship Hall

Friends and Members of UUCH, please join everyone in our monthly potluck this Sunday 3 September 2023. Bring a starter, side, entree, dessert, and/or yourselves and/or a friend and/or your whole family to enjoy good conversation, great fellowship, and the greatest time. This potluck is brought to you by the Hospitality Committee, Kaffeeklastch, and all of our donors to this event.

If you aren’t bringing a dish, come anyway because all are welcome to join in these festivities.

Caring for Trans Families Webinar

Join Regional Congregational Life staff and consultants for a national three session series that will empower congregational leaders to faithfully support our transgender/non-binary community members. In this series, we will examine what multi-faceted support looks like including pastoral support, structural support and resources to help congregations work toward radical inclusivity, and advocacy in the public sphere.

All sessions begin at 5:00 PM Central Time and end at 7:00 PM Central Time.

Your individual registration covers the entire three session series.

Registration will close on September 12th.

Spaces are limited. Register today here.

Adult Religious Education Team Planning

Come and join in our conversation of the survey results this Saturday, September 2 from 4-6 pm in the ARE room. This inaugural meeting of the new church year is when we can make solid plans based on those responses in which congregants have expressed interest.

Birthday Concert for Bryan Walls--You're Invited!

Bryan Walls is turning 60 in September, and is celebrating with a potluck and concert featuring Singer/Songwriter Pierce Pettis on Sunday evening, September 3, in the UUCH building. No gifts, no admission, not an official UUCH event, but donations will be accepted to cover the cost of the event, with any extra going to the church. Please email Diane Walls (dwalls@claydogdesign.com) if you plan to attend.

New happenings in Adult Religious Education starting in September

Sundays at 9:30 am, ARE room

On the 2nd Sunday of every month, Gary Hitt will facilitate discussions on Major Issues of the 21st Century: Climate change. Mass migrations. Amazing, potentially disruptive advances in technology, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cryptocurrency. Pandemics. Terrorism. Gun violence. An aging population. Worker shortages. Water shortages. These are major issues that we will face in the 21st century. What is being done or should be done to address these issues? The discussion will be selected by attendees. Email garyhitt150@gmail.com with your suggestions.

On the 4th Sunday of every month, June Norton will facilitate a discussion based on the book, Trusting Change, by Karen Hering. Whether you are living through significant personal transitions or navigating a world reshaping itself faster than ever, the book offers ten skills for living on the threshold, as well as spiritual practices and inspiration for connecting with your own inner wisdom. You do not need to read the book to attend. If you need a copy, please contact Teri Thomas, adult.re@uuch.org

Please register with Teri if you want to be included in notices regarding these offerings. Also, childcare can be provided if advance notice is given.

Property Day, Saturday, September 9, 2023

Maintaining the church building and grounds is important to support the mission of UUCH, and you can help. On Saturday, September 9 we'll meet around 9 am and work to early afternoon, but any amount of time would be helpful. No special skills are needed for tasks such as replacing burned-out light bulbs or cleaning the courtyard and playground, but if you have some electrical experience you can help replace light fixtures. If gardening is more to your liking, the flower beds and vegetable garden need tending and some invasive shrubs need to be removed. Join us for camaraderie, fellowship, and pizza! For more information, contact the Property Committee at property@uuch.org

Share the Plate

During the third quarter of 2023, UUCH will be sharing our plate proceeds with Kids to Love. All plate proceeds received from the Thursday before the first Sunday through the Saturday after the first Sunday will be split with Love Huntsville. In September, this includes plate donations received from August 31st through September 9th.

The Kids to Love Foundation has grown to become a lot of things since it began in 2004 in founder and CEO Lee Marshall’s garage. Since then, Kids to Love has served hundreds of thousands of children living in foster care, putting clothes on their backs, getting Christmas presents under the tree, and giving them scholarships for the next steps of their education. Kids to Love also operates Davidson Farms, a foster home for girls, the Whitaker Cottage Community for girls aging out of foster care, and their own licensed Child Placing Agency. It is also home to KTECH, a private school that offers job training in manufacturing, robotics, and more to young adults and people looking to make a career change.

Please consider giving generously to this important, Huntsville-based program during the first week of the month.
