CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
As we look backwards this Black History Month we hold up Unitarian Universalist Frances Ellen Watkins Harper. Frances was a prolific writer, lecturer, and reformer. A writer for the African Methodist Episcopal church and member of the Unitarian church, she once refused to give up her seat on a Philadelphia streetcar. When the conductor refused to take her money at the end of her ride, Frances threw it on the floor and left. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper was undoubtedly a courageous and powerful voice for justice, speaking truth to power and daring to stand up and step out against the countless oppressions impacting her world and her life.

RECURRING WEEKLY EVENTS
NEWS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ours is a religion that focuses more on the fullness of life than the events after our death. We also recognize that situations do change, and that in the event of serious accident, illness or death, when immediate family members are not nearby, the church is often expected to serve as an information resource. To serve this need, the church places (for those members who want it) vital information in a confidential file, available to the ministers.

OUR CARING CONGREGATION
As you plan your holiday winter giving, please consider donating to the Little Free Pantries run by Julie Laut (in Urbana) and AJ Herzog (in Champaign), which they have maintained since March 2020. Their Amazon wish list has been updated to include unique winter items. All items off the wishlist will be delivered to Julie's house and shared between the two pantries. You are also welcome to drop off items in person at both locations. Questions? Contact Julie (jlaut@hushmail.com), or AJ (zogs92@gmail.com).
JOYS AND SORROWS sent to joysandsorrows@uucuc.org for last Sunday, February 13, 2022.

From Samuel Beshers: Joy for my father Daniel Beshers, who recently got out of the hospital, twice. Joy for Jerry Frye, who recently got out of the hospital, twice. And a third joy for Benjamin Hanson's singing.

From Jim & Sandy Hannum: Concern for Jerry Frye, who was back in the hospital this week.

From Jill Houser: Sadly Ali Newbold has passed on early this morning. Not sure if her daughter Gina contacted.

From Cindy Ingold: One of my cousins died last week from complications related to COVID. She was one of the kindest people I have ever known, and we were going to do genealogical research together when I retired. I am heartbroken.
Please send your joys or sorrows to joysandsorrows@uucuc.organy time before the Joys and Sorrows portion of the service. They will be read aloud.
GIVING AND GRATITUDE
Due to the dire situation of many of our neighbors, starting Christmas Eve and through January 1st, UUCUC partnered with Cunningham Township to collect donations to go toward the utility bills of people in the CU community struggling during this pandemic time. That partnership resulted in $2,974 collected for the UU Utilities Fund by the UUCUC congregation.
UUCUC Social Action Offering. Each month a selected organization is chosen to receive offerings from our congregation. You may donate to the social action offering for the month in one of the following ways:

  • Online Donations
  • 50/50 Shared Offering via Online Donation (your contribution is equally split between UUCUC and the recipient of our monthly social action organization)
  • 50/50 Shared Offering available via Text (your contribution is equally split between UUCUC and the recipient of our monthly social action organization)
  • If you prefer mailing a check, please mail the check to the UUCUC office at 309 West Green Street, Urbana, Illinois 61801. While our building is currently closed to the public, our staff continues to process checks via mail on a weekly basis.
Access to quality education for all students is an issue of justice and equity. Students who
don’t have access to a quality education suffer long term consequences. The education
achievement gap is often described as an opportunity gap. Students who have access to
educational materials, enriching experiences and supportive adults within and outside the
school environment do better in school than students who do not have access to these
supports.

The CUSF is the only organization dedicated to supporting creativity, innovation and
excellence in Champaign-Urbana public schools. They do so by providing grants to
teachers as well as scholarships to students. Schools’ role in the lives of students and
families was made apparent during the pandemic of the past 22 months. As the impact of
the pandemic improves, the challenges facing teachers, students and their families will
continue. The financial support provided by CUSF allows teachers to do what they are
uniquely skilled at: responding to student and family needs in individual, direct and
innovative ways. Please be generous in your support of the recipient of February's Social Action Offering – the Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation.
