2021 Commencement Information for Glenbard West

The Glenbard West staff is looking forward to this in-person opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2021. We are so excited that the Class of 2021 will get to walk across the stage on Duchon Field!  It has been a long and trying year for the senior class, but the Class of 2021 has shown resilience and character.  We applaud each of you.  As soon as an in-person ceremony became a reality, we started planning using the guidelines laid out by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the DuPage County Health Department. We are designing a safe graduation experience that honors our beloved traditions and the event for a group who’ve missed so much this year. You deserve a big celebration!   After Spring Break, each senior family will receive an email with graduation related information and a couple of questionnaires/forms you will be required to complete.  Since this year is unique we thought it would be best to communicate details about the ceremonies early.

At Glenbard West, we continue to enforce mitigation measures to maintain a safe school environment and avoid the spread of COVID-19.  Mitigation measures include wearing masks, washing hands, maintaining social distancing, and avoiding large gatherings. We need your help to do the same not only on campus but also within our communities.  This will require sacrifice and restraint but being healthy and able to participate in Graduation and end-of-the-year events is our priority.

We look forward to sharing this commencement with our families and the Class of 2021. Commencement will be an occasion where we reflect on the significance of their accomplishments and the pride we all feel on their behalf.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Chris Mitchell, Assistant Principal (630) 942-7461.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR ATHLETICS
West Athletic Update

Glenbard West is very proud to have completed our shortened winter season for our student-athletes in boys and girls basketball, badminton, competitive dance and competitive cheer, bowling, boys swimming, and girls gymnastics. I would like to thank all of our athletes, coaches, and families for working together to make this experience as memorable as possible, especially for our Senior athletes. Our Competitive Cheer team qualified for Virtual State, and our Boys Basketball and Girls Gymnastics teams celebrated West Suburban Conference Silver Division Championships.

We will need this same commitment to minimizing the risk involved during this pandemic by adhering to all protocols in place. There are many changes that have and will take place over the upcoming weeks and months, but our athletes deserve the opportunity to compete and participate in activities that they enjoy. I appreciate everyone’s commitment and support to make this happen by following guidelines and helping to limit the spread.

At times, weather dictates changes and reschedules, and we ask everyone to stay up to date with all changes on our athletic website at http://il.8to18.com/glenbardwest for the most recent updates and game schedules. There will be changes, cancellations, and postponements, and flexibility and communication will be the key to a successful season.

GO WEST!
DR. REBECCA SULAVER
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR INSTRUCTION
Here is updated information regarding the upcoming PSAT/SAT and ACCESS testing. ALL STUDENTS are impacted by the information below.

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) informed all schools that the PSAT 8/9 for freshman and PSAT 10 for sophomores are canceled statewide. April 14 and 15 will now be regular instructional days for all students. If you have questions about these assessments, feel free to contact Rebecca Sulaver, Assistant Principal for Instruction ([email protected]).

All Juniors will take the SAT in person on Tuesday, April 13. The state has eliminated the essay component of the exam. Juniors who are fully Remote and decide to come into the building to take the SAT will not have to submit a saliva sample. All students must wear a mask, socially distance and complete the electronic health screener upon arriving at West. The makeup day for SAT testing is April 27. Juniors are required to take the SAT to satisfy the graduation requirement unless the student is eligible to take the alternative assessment or otherwise is exempt from testing. Juniors who do not test this year will be required to take the SAT in the Spring of 2022. Click here for more information from the ISBE. If you have questions about this assessment, feel free to contact Tony Bergintino, SAT Coordinator. ([email protected])

Seniors who did not participate in the SAT in September 2020 have been exempted from this requirement per ISBE as of March 8, 2021. See the message from the state below. If you have any questions please contact, Tony Bergintino ([email protected]), SAT Coordinator.

Diploma Requirement Update for Grade 12 Students: Public Act 101-643 makes all current 12th-grade students eligible for graduation regardless of whether that student took the SAT in 11th grade. Exemption paperwork for current grade 12 students who do not test is not required to be submitted to ISBE.

ACCESS Testing for EL Students: The enrollment of any new student to the district must include a Home Language Survey. Potential English Learners (ELs) must be screened and placed in EL services if they qualify. Additionally, all ELs must take the annual English language proficiency assessment (ACCESS). Districts must make annual placement determinations for ELs based on the ACCESS scores. Glenbard will give the ACCESS test on Wednesday, April 21 and Wednesday, April 28. If you have any questions about this assessment, contact World Languages and EL Department Chair, Lisa Alajoki ([email protected]).

SUPERINTENDENT, DR. DAVID LARSON
Superintendent outlines student achievement highlights

With so much going on during the pandemic, it’s important to pause and celebrate good things happening in our schools. The impressive metrics noted below are reflective of the strong instruction, programming, and partnership of Glenbard District 87 and our six sender school districts. Let’s look at a few key student achievement highlights:

SAT success
  • Our students’ average SAT continues to outpace the state average SAT score by 49 points. Our SAT score growth of 16 points in the past year is also above the state and national averages.

College Board Equity and Excellence
  • Our recent College Board Equity and Excellence recognition notes 47% of seniors passing one or more Advanced Placement courses during their four years at GlenbardThis is more than double the national and state averages, 20.1% and 21.5% respectively.

Postsecondary success
  • We have prepared students for postsecondary success by exposing them to college-level AP coursework, increasing the percentage of students exposed to an AP course from 58% to 72% in seven years.
  • Over the past 6 years, we have added more than 1,000 traditionally underrepresented students participating in at least one AP course during 11th and 12th grade.
  • We have a 73% AP passing rate of 3 or higher, which is higher than the state and national averages.

Graduation rate
  • We maintain a strong graduation rate of 98 percent.

College graduation
  • Glenbard students graduate college with a four-year degree at a rate 9% higher than the national average.

These key highlights happened because of our students’ hard work; families’ support of students; and the work of our exceptional faculty and staff. In partnership with you, we are empowering students to be successful in the future they choose.
