Statement from AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka on President Joe Biden’s proposed infrastructure plan:
Today’s announcement brings us one step closer to repairing, rebuilding and restoring our country. Working people are continuing to bear the brunt of the greatest national crisis since the Great Depression, and any just recovery will require unprecedented federal investments in the working communities that have lost the most.
It’s time for Congress to step up and deliver the funding we need to tackle the climate injustice, racial injustice and economic injustice facing working families while creating a new generation of well-paying union jobs.
However, investments alone are far from sufficient. In order to shift the balance of power in favor of working people, we need to rewrite the fundamental rules of the economy. That’s why President Biden is calling on Congress to finally pass the PRO Act and strengthen our freedom to organize on the job. As we’ve said time and again, we can only build back better if union members are doing the building.

Labor Movement Condemns Georgia Republicans’ Outrageous Voter Suppression Law |

Statement from AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka after Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed S.B. 202, a sweeping voter suppression bill:
Georgia Republicans have shown their true colors. The rushed passage of S.B. 202 is no less than a full-blown assault on Georgians’ right to vote, one aimed at silencing working people of color across the state. Brian Kemp is openly dragging Georgia’s elections back to the Jim Crow era, from making it harder to register to vote to criminalizing those who bring water to voters waiting at the polls.
Kemp and his party have seen what happens when working people make our voices heard. Change happens. Progress happens. We build a stronger, more just future—and throw right-wing extremists out of power.
Thursday’s actions are a clear reminder that Georgia Republicans aren’t interested in representing Georgians, much less amplifying their voices. They are only interested in preserving their own power.
America’s labor movement will not stand by quietly, and we will continue fighting for a future in which every voter has free and fair access to the ballot. Working Georgians overcame enormous obstacles to win change in November and again in January. Organizing together, we can overcome this challenge as well.

Ohio AFL-CIO Workers First Agenda |

The Ohio AFL-CIO followed suit and has adopted an Ohio-specific “Workers First” agenda that the federation will be working on in the Ohio General Assembly over the next two years.
As the essential nature of our workforce and unions has been on display during the pandemic, Union favorability among Americans is at a near all-time high. Our Workers First agenda will focus on six key areas that invest in workers and rebuilds our economy from the middle class out. Our 2021-22 Legislative Agenda is outlined in a downloadable PDF here.

Why do we need the PRO Act?
Our outdated labor laws are no longer strong enough to protect us in the workplace.
High-profile corporations openly union-bust without facing consequences. Anti-worker lawmakers have passed divisive and racist “right to work” laws in 27 states. Inequality has skyrocketed without unions to fight back.
The PRO Act would change that.
Where is the bill now?
Let’s show the Senate that people are pro-union across the country and across party lines.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act last year, but anti-worker legislators in the Senate blocked it. Undeterred, working people fought to elect pro-worker lawmakers to the Senate, House and White House. And we won.
Lawmakers gave us their word they would make the PRO Act a top priority. It’s time for them to keep that promise. The House passed the PRO Act for a second time on March 9, 2021, sending the bill to the U.S. Senate.
- Empower workers to organize and bargain.
- Hold corporations accountable for union-busting.
- Repeal “right to work” laws, which were created during the Jim Crow era to keep White and Black workers from organizing together.
Stronger unions mean higher wages, safer working conditions and dignity for all people who work. The PRO Act is our first step to get there.

The Cincinnati AFL-CIO Labor Council’s 34th Annual Golf Tournament is Friday, August 6, 2021, once again on the Grizzly Course at the City of Mason Golf Center! This nationally renowned course was designed by Jack Nicklaus, 18-time Major Champion and Ohio native, and has been host to several PGA, LPGA, and Senior PGA tournaments.
The entry fee is $150 per individual golfer or $500 for a four-person team. The fees include greens fees, carts, coffee, donuts, lunch, and prizes. Individuals and/or organizations may also purchase hole sponsorship ($150), lunch-only tickets ($35), our VIP Package, which includes a four-person team plus hole sponsorship ($600). We also gratefully accept donated items for door prizes at this fun event!

The Paindemic: The Intersection between the COVID-19 Pandemic and Deaths of Despair

In this webinar we will detail the extent of the problem of deaths of despair and how the COVID-19 pandemic has added fuel to the fire. Increased stress related to pandemic conditions and its effect on mental health are important factors driving an increase in alcohol consumption, opioid overdoses and fatalities, and increased suicides. Mental health concerns include anxiety, depression, and increased risk of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Getting infected, infecting family members, as well as adjusting to changes in work and work schedules, loss of pay, and work-place violence are major issues of concerns. It is also difficult to manage confrontations and escalation that may result from customers, clients, or vendors refusing to comply with COVID-19 safety protocols. Minority and low wage workers tend to be most impacted by stressors including lack of access to healthcare, food and housing insecurity, job loss, and discrimination. In addition to these discussions from high profile panelists, we will also review interventions such as peer assistance programs, training, and increased access to mental health and substance use care in the workplace.

Implicit Bias and Microaggressions |

You have probably heard the expression “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.” Maybe it’s true somewhere, but when it comes to dealing with our biases, it could not be farther from the truth. In the first session, we will look at the biases we all have, many of which we may not be conscious of. Not only can they hurt us, but they can hurt our clients and co-workers, and our productivity as well. Becoming aware of our own biases will help us mitigate them in the workplace and promote a culture of courtesy, respect, and collaboration.
In part two of this two-part series, we will focus on microaggressions. Merriam -Webster defines a microaggression as a "comment or action that subtly and often unconsciously or unintentionally expresses a prejudiced attitude toward a member of a marginalized group (such as a racial minority)" They are experienced as slights, insults, indignities, and denigrating messages even though they may not have been intended to cause harm and invisible to the perpetrator. This online workshop will include discussion, exercises, and actions we can take to understand, uncover and reduce some of our biases in a safe and constructive environment.

COVID-19 Mass Vaccination Clinics |
|
March 31, 2021 | COVID-19 - The State of Ohio is sponsoring 18 mass vaccination clinics to ensure all Ohioans have access to COVID-19 vaccine as it becomes more widely available. Once they are operating, any Ohioan who is eligible to receive the vaccine under the Ohio Department of Health’s vaccination plan will be able to get a vaccination at any of Ohio's mass vaccination clinics. Find information here about each clinic and how to sign up for a vaccine appointment.
Youth ages 16 and 17 must have parental consent for any vaccine and must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to receive the vaccine. These individuals are eligible to receive the Pfizer vaccine, the only COVID-19 vaccine authorized for use with people under age 18.
