LHC is, once again, partnering with Leadership Louisville for their latest event, the Best of Leadership Summit, Thursday, May 13 from 9 am to 5 pm. This virtual day of learning and growth will offer relevant and leading-edge content from global leadership experts for leaders at all levels. Featured speakers and sessions will help participants:
  • Build organizations that are more innovative, more profitable, and more adept at building high-performance teams.
  • Gain deeper knowledge around inclusive leadership, creating psychological safety, and leading successful change.
  • Grow your ability to create a sense of belonging, achieve better results in our new normal.

Leadership Premier 2021 is in full swing! Class participants have had program sessions focused on healthcare, human services and state government. Additional learning via the program's "learning opportunity" component has included a
virtual" discussion about the documentary, Columbia's Promise, as well as interesting stories about Columbia's history with Barbara Kellner, LP '08. Also, class members enjoyed a "behind the scenes" visit to The Mall in Columbia with Barb Nicklas, LP '08. Thank you both for sharing your time to lead these efforts.

Leadership Essentials (LE) 2021 recently held its Teams Session, virtually, February 11. The adjusted format included exercises, discussion and reflection on the stages of teams, de-railers, key leadership characteristics in the team context, and case studies. Participants wrote a letter to themselves about the session experience, insights and intentions for action; the letters will be mailed to them this summer. Upcoming virtual sessions will focus on The Leadership Jigsaw, Conflict & Conflict Resolution and, Leadership in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex & Ambiguous World.

Also, LE Alumni recently participated in a quarterly Speaker Series dealing with Stressors and Strains, hosted by Casey Tait, LE '20, with Deloitte.
Leadership Essentials is pleased to announce a new free, webinar series, Citizen Leadership in the 21st Century, sponsored by Loyola University's ASPIRE program. This program will consist of 4 webinar sessions, each dedicated to a select topic and include a speaker and/or panel. Also, an optional, post-session, small group "Learning Circle" will be held for a limited number of participants for added interaction and discussion. Dates and topics are noted below - all sessions (webinars/learning circles) will run from 12:30 to 2 pm:

  • March 18 - Dismantling Racism: Where do I Begin? Learning Circle - March 25
  • April 15- New Leadership: Catalyzing Transformation through Generational Change - Learning Circle - April 22
  • May 6- Stewardship of Place: Caring for the Places We Love - Learning Circle - May 13
  • June 3 - Unprecedented! The Impact of Technology on Society - Learning Circle June 10

Mark your calendar for Thursday, March 25, beginning at 7pm, for a conversation about leadership through the lens of professional athletics. Stacie Hunt, LP '02, President & CEO of LHC, will moderate a discussion with Katrina Adams, the former Chairman & President of the United States Tennis Association. In addition, Ms.Adams was the first black, as well as the youngest person ever to serve in that capacity for the USTA.

Community & Volunteer Opportunities

Leadership Howard County is seeking candidates interested in joining its Board of Directors. Individuals should be committed to fulfilling LHCs' vision: To be the critical force in preparing, inspiring, connecting, and sustaining community leaders to make Howard County the best place to live, work and play. Terms run from July 1 to June 30. Click here to learn more. Deadline to apply is March 8.

Howard Community College's virtual Social Science Lecture Series continues through March, on select Tuesdays, beginning at 6 pm. This series features HCC's faculty discussing their topical areas of expertise, including: American politics, sex and gender, culture, the Fourth Amendment, and de-escalation techniques in policing. Each session includes time for questions from participants.

St. Johns Episocial Church's Social Justice & Transformation Commission is hosting a special Lenten series, Racial Reconciliation: A Time for Healing - March 10, March 17 and March 24 from 7 to 8:30 pm. This program is free; however advanced registration is requested.

The Autism Hiring Program, co-sponsored by the Howard County Autism Society, addresses the needs of adults with autism who have high-level, marketable skills and would benefit from skills assessment, interview preparation and social navigation for a more competitive advantage. At the same time, the program also strives to connect small and mid-sized businesses in Central Maryland to a competent, capable workforce, and provides staff training and ongoing supports. Read more ...

Ohana of Howard County, Inc. is a community building program that works with incoming 9th grade students who have struggled with academic achievement yet, demonstrate learning and leadership potential that will be actualized with the right combination of resources and opportunities. The student is surrounded by an Ohana, a diverse community group of four people, all working towards a shared goal and learning from each other.  If you are interested in learning more, please contact April Martin Yi or visit their website OhanaHC.
The Howard County Chamber of Commerce is seeking business executives of small, medium and large companies who have a desire to serve on the Chamber's Board of Directors. Successful nominees must commit to serving a two-year term with an option for two additional terms. Emailed recommendations/nominations to Lynn Song by March 15.

HCPSS seeks members for several Career Academy Advisory Committees. The role of these committees is to review curriculum, discuss any industry trends and technology that should be included in curriculum, and offer suggestions and support for additional opportunities such as field trips, scholarships, competitions, and guest speakers.
